A 22-year-old Colombian model is facing the death penalty after she was caught with a plastic bag full of drugs hidden inside her laptop.
Juliana Lopez seemed to have the world at her feet, running a trendy boutique and hosting a television show, as well as being a well-known professional football player.
And winning the Miss Antioquia beauty pageant, she was going to participate in the Miss World Medellin competition this week but her family suddenly lost contact with her while she was in China to purchase items for her shop.

Worried about her whereabouts, her family contacted the Colombian embassy saying that she had vanished. She had apparently flown into the airport in the city of Guangzhou, in the southeast Chinese province of Canton, after which they lost contact with her.
Chinese officials confirmed to the family she had been arrested for drug smuggling. It was not specified what kind of narcotics were inside her laptop but police say they found a large quantity of a banned substance.

Lopez plays for the women's team Divas del Futbol in Medellin. She is also a student at the University of San Buenaventura, in the city of Bello, in the north central Colombian district of Antioquia.
Carrying drugs in China is not only banned, but can carry the death penalty and relatives and friends are now desperately trying to collect money to get top lawyers and a team sent over to defend Lopez. They also want family and friends to travel over to support her.

Iirc Guangzhou has a huge drug production industry - she could easily have been a victim of some smuggling scam. Or not - people do stupid stuff. Either way she doesn't deserve the fate she's likely to receive.

agree..

Also, I can't imagine a laptop having enough room to fit a very large amount of drugs. I would suspect cocaine, so perhaps a kilo?

(I understand the laws over there are ridiculous so anything could be considered a 'large quantity'.)

Actually, it's unclear if she was caught on arrival or departure from China. I read she stopped in Paris then went missing for over a week according to family.

Most likely arrival...

Yes, but it seems she was caught entering the country after a stopover in Paris. The original source El Tiempo has an article discussing an old boyfriend. It's difficult for me to understand since I do not speak Spanish and google translate isn't perfect.

Despite the warning that diplomatic authorities refused to publicly reveal what substance and quantity took the computer that was in the luggage of the model, several relatives knew.

"Coca paste", press it to family and friends, including team members Divas Soccer, where he played Juliana said. In this regard, the authorities stated that it would be an unusual case because the mules usually take heroin, cocaine powder or liquid cocaine.

Ex-Boyfriend, is the key?

What nobody he told -and just transpired on Wednesday after investigations and revelations of time- is that Juan Esteban Marin Garcia, Juliana's ex-boyfriend, was in China and arrested two days later.

As we read in his passport, Marin was born on January 3, 1990 and, according to friends, he met Juliana in the Football League St. Bonaventure University, where they studied both.

Migration of young-student Business International- show that had already entered China on 4 December 2014 and has a displacement more Juliana company.

David Muñoz, uncle of the girl, said that the relationship was already over and that eventually saw the boy in the house when visiting the model. Also she insists that her niece could perform under pressure.

But the last tweet Marin wrote in his account seemed to anticipate what would happen.

"If that is your will, Lord, even if it hurts, it's what you have for me. Give me strength to face this situation. Cuídame angel " , tweeted the July 2, 18 days before he was captured.

While these facts are clarified, Juliana's family continues to collect funds to pay for his defense and claiming he is innocent.

(Paper also mentions that 50 grams or more can be punished with a life sentence or the death penalty.)

She's too hot to be executed haha... Not to get too off topic, but I read a story about a guy who was detained in the UAE and they found a trace of weed on the heel of his shoe from putting out a j. Lolwut?!? I don't think they gave him time but they totally detained him for longer than needed. Insane.

Poor girl, has to deal with all this bullshit, I'm sure she's not totally innocent, but who knows of it was someone scamming her.
