Hi,

I took codeine yesterday for the 3rd time, about 260 mg, codeine being the only opiate I've ever tried for the moment. I took it for the first time 3 or 4 weeks ago, the same dose, and was nodding very heavily for about 2 or 3 hours - in any case, I definitely had a strong reaction to it. A few days after that I took about 160mg (which is all I had left), didn't feel much but I assumed that was because I hadn't taken a strong dose. So yesterday I took 260mg again hoping to get about the same effects as the first time but I really didn't feel much...just very relaxed/warm/fuzzy, but barely even nodding, and I don't understand why I was so far away from my first reaction to codeine. Does anyone know why that happened? Tolerance can't build up THAT quickly, can it?

you'll have to expand on the changing factors beyond what you've expressed.

it's anyone's guess, really

Well nothing changed, really...I'd eaten about the same amount before each time, I was doing the exact same thing while intoxicated each time, I was pretty much in the same mood/state of mind...only thing that changed was that it was my 3rd time with codeine and not my 1st.

sounds like something psychosomatic going.

after a reasonable stint of abstinence for myself (6+ month), then going back to hammering opioids for consecutive days has my tolerance rise back up in no time. environmental conditioning/learned response plays a big part on my behalf.

How much food you have in your belly could have something to do with it...

160mg and 260mg are odd figures. How much is in each pill?

I take Dihydrocodeine recreationally like once a week and haven't had tolerance issues. When I take them on consecutive days, the high diminishes, as you'd expect.

20mg per pill.
Yeah I figured tolerance would be a bit far-fetched in my case. It's possible I might have eaten a bit more this time round than last time, though I don't remember the exact details.
Otherwise, I was wondering if maybe it might be because that first time 3 weeks ago I used codeine was also the first time I'd ever used an opiate, and I've heard that the first opiate high is irrecuperable, and so nothing after it would be as good ?

that's purely subjective (that the first high is irreplaceable)between users; i'd argue against it for the sake of it and because i think otherwise.

To be honest my first opi high was shit, well obviously good enough for me to return. My first proper opiate intoxication however is impossible to experience again. Even with long sobriety now 400mg of codeine feels like 60mg when I started.

And one more thing: if you ain't getting high anymore you are VERY lucky! It may not seem it but you'll be less likely to use in future and take the familiar path of addiction. So stop, right now - you start chasing that high and you may as well pawn your soul - I'm relatively sober now, I.e. No longer a true addict but I'm still haunted by opiates, fuck I dream about being high, I count money in how much of X opiate I can afford and that's me sober. I doubt ill ever escape the mindset and I really hope you never have to deal with it.
In short, fuck opiates.

i personally think the first high is the worst, it took me a while to appreciate the effects of opiates. I don't know why you wouldn't feel the same, i don't think i've ever nodded from codeine, is there caffeine in your pills? perhaps you just had more caffeine and it changed the high. What's in your stomach as you dose does make a huge difference, try to always dose on an empty stomach. Are these pure codeine pills or are you cold water extracting them? if it's CWE then it could be possible you didn't get as much out of them the third time around.

RobotRipping yeah these are pure codeine pills so that wouldn't have been the issue. I hadn't had any caffeine that day, either. I guess the most logical explanation is that I'd eaten more then, it's quite possible :)

SproutOnSmack I don't plan on chasing the high I got the first time, though now I can say I understand why people would use again and again looking to catch it one more time, especially considering I didn't get anywhere near it yesterday, hah. No but anyway, having had a strong benzo addiction myself I'm quite aware of how much drugs can fuck you up if you're not careful, which is why I'm being sure to use the codeine only in ways that will limit addiction risks - i.e. NOT for self-medication, not too often, blablabla. After the first time I used it I felt no want to re-use immediately, at all, and same after yesterday. If I do end up developing a tolerance to the dose I'm taking, I definitely won't augment it. Also I don't plan on getting into stronger opiates.
That's it for my self-justification...but yeah I've been addicted already so it's not as if I'm completely naive about this :\

It was only Codeine though, it's probably the mildest off all opiates so it's likely you'll have better experiences should you continue...

BUT, I would never recommend you trying very intense opiates due to addiction potential.

Don't get me wrong, all opiates are addictive, but some less than others.

I take Dihydrocodeine once a week for fun, it's about twice as potent and twice as euphoric as Codeine, but has much less abuse potential than the well known opiates such as Morphine, Oxycodone and Heroin.

(I've had Morphine orally and IV in hospital, but that's obviously very different. Fuck me what an impressive substance)

Oh yeah I know it's very mild, to be honest the first time I tried it I wasn't expecting it to feel anywhere near as good, but since it did I thought it'd be just as good this time round.
Dihydrocodeine sounds really good though, I hadn't heard of it before but i'll keep it in mind :) definitely won't go anywhere near the other ones you mentioned though. I've had IV morphine in the hospital once too but I was in such a bad state at the time I don't remember much of it unfortunately, lol

I'm a big fan of dhc..listen to what the earlier poster said and keep use sporatic (if you're smart and able) to avoid tolerance...and
because the w/d's are much harder than codeine which out of most opiates is one of the easiest to kick.

Honestly, IME the best way to feel an opiate is on an empty stomach...and the smartest thing to do is eat small..20-40 min.
after injested.

I don't always do the smartest things though. 8)

Careful, because you'll be climbing that Opiate ladder before you know it.

ORAL

Morphine 30 mg PO =

Heroin = 30 mg
Codeine = 200 mg
Hydrocodone = 30 mg
Oxycodone = 20 mg
Hydromorphone = 7.5 mg
Oxymorphone = 10 mg
Methadone = 5-10 mg†
Levorphanol = 4 mg
Meperidine = 300 mg
Tramadol = 150 mg§
Dihydrocodeine = 100 mg
Dextropropoxyphene = 130-200 mg*

† Note: Equianalgesic dosing ratios between methadone and other opioids are complex, thus requiring slow, cautious conversion

§ Tramadol is not a typical opioid, many even find it more stimulatory in effect and thus it will have varying effects from person to person
