Codeine question - Is a CWE necessary?

I'm kind of new to the whole opiate thing, and so I'm going to try OTC tablets which contain codeine. Is it worth doing a cold water extraction, or is it fine to begin by just popping a couple of pills?

You can take a few pills but make sure you do not take more than 4 grams of acetaminophen in a 24 hour period. If you need more than 80mg or so to feel the codeine then the CWE is necessary IMO. You should also look into potentiators for codeine so you don't have to take as much and take your whole dose at once to ensure as much is converted to morphine as possible.

When i was new I could feel as little as 32mg, which for me would be 4 pills, that's a safe dose to test but still be conscious of your acetaminophen consumption.

I believe the max amount of acentaminophen permitted is 1 gram, 4 sounds like way too much. you probably have pills with ~500mg acentaminophen + 30mg codeine. In order to get recreational effects from codeine you'll need at least 100mg (being that a very low dose). So, please, do the water extraction. If it's not for your kidneys sake, then do it for the tax payers who'll pay for your dialysis later..

The maximum per diem dose recommended by the FDA is 4 grams. And depending on formulation, codeine pills can contain anywhere from no APAP to 500mg. Read the label and make sure you know what you're eating.

^This. I don't know what country you're in but some countries only have OTC codeine that's like 8mg codeine/500mg APAP, 15mg codeine/500mg APAP, etc. Read the label. If you don't have an opiate tolerance, just popping the pills may be a possibility, but you'll still be consuming a large amount of APAP.

What is the dosage of the pills you're working with?

Here's a link if you decide to do an extraction Cold Water Extraction Mega Thread & FAQ v2.0 It's important to note that other actives besides acetaminophen may have smaller daily maximums. Furthermore 4g of APAP a day is not 4g at once.

I'm going to send this over to Basic Drug Discussion as it a simple question about non-narcotic analgesic drug dosing, and not really about CWEs.

You should take just one to see if you are allergic to it. Otherwise, a dose of 120-180 is good for a first timer. Google opiate potentiation for some more ideas about how to extend the high. I don't recommend taking more than 2 grams of APAP at once, especially because the FDA sets the max at 1 gram and they want to lower it still.

^Allergy tests are always a good idea.

Be careful with certain opiate potentiation methods that inhibit liver function, as they will cause you to feel less of the codeine's effects. (Codeine is a prodrug).

However, other opiate potentiation methods such as using DXM or sedating (first generation) antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), doxylamine (various brand names), chlorphenamine (Chlor-Trimeton), promethazine (Phenergan, Sominex), and many others work very well with codeine. Check out this thread for more information regarding the usage of antihistamines with codeine. Again, most methods that involve changing metabolism of drugs should be researched beforehand, because some of them do the opposite to codeine. When it doubt, read through the whole thread. This resource is also quite helpful and very in-depth.

Be careful with other depressants such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates and alcohol. If you're new to this, I recommend not using any depressants except for the sedating antihistamines.

Actually, codeine was thought to be a morphine prodrug, but relatively new research has proven that codeine-6-glucuronide is responsible for analgesia, not morphine. (Source)

The only true morphine prodrug is heroin.
