Injecting DHC will cause the same, quite possibly deadly, histamine reaction that codeine does. So yeah, don't inject it.

Looking at a list of PBS covered medicines just yesterday, I found Codeine Phosphate IV?


Somebody on BL mentioned that in Ukraine (or some other eastern european country) shooting up codeine was quite common. Jason Crest (haven't seen him in a while?) tried to find more info in ADD but I think that thread died.


I think it's worthwhile getting confirmation on this one, yeah Mr. B?

Oy vey, are you sure it was IV? IM codeine I know is used, but IV use I have never heard of in medicine.

As for the thread, yeah I remember that, I thought he was in Turkey though... but yeah, I remember the poster saying the rush was like a sudden-onset flu or fever.

Just for everyone's benefit; a case of codeine phosphate being accidentally administered through IV.

Why would you bother even trying to IV it if it's a pro-drug?

^ Because not everyone knows that it needs to be metabolized to morphine first, and some people just assume that if you IV anything it makes it x-times betters.

Hence, why we got BL.

DHC has the advantage of being somewhat more potent then codeine, and also has no ceiling dose. As for comparing codeine and H...well...

But theoretically, as the metabolism from DHC to dihydromorphine is responsible for negligible effects, one could IV DHC to get high. That is, if you're not worried about probable death from pulmonary oedema...

youre right, it has to be IM codeine phosphate. I've seen a vial before and it says NOT FOR IV USE in large letters.

A quick google search yields only horror stories, so I guess MIMS lied to me (although I'll try & remember to follow that up).


For the record codeine does have an affinity for the mu opiod receptor (albeit tiny).


blau1005: Do you get high drinking rikodeine? I've done it a couple of times & found it far inferior to a similar dose of codeine. I thought that may have been because of the sorbitol flushing it out of my system, but if it works for you?

Well yeah, no one is arguing that. So you might feel some nice opioid warmth for a few seconds before having a horrible reaction... eugh, I don't wanna think about it!

Sometimes i took a chlorpromazine we well and it enhanced the effects of the codeine.

How much chlorpromazine did you take? Can you elaborate on this combination?

Well the first time i took chlorpromazine was when a friend of mine gave it to me. He was a brown sugar addict and he told me that this detoxes the system so i took a 50mg pill that night.

The next morning i had my usual morning dosage of codeine ( a 100 ml bottle of phensedyl which contained 200 mg of codeine phosphate) and strangely i got very stoned. After over a year of being addicetd to codeine, i always longed for the high i felt when i first had it and this time i got it and i wondered why. It then occurred to me that i had a chlorpromazine the previous night - and probably it must have cleaned up my system or whatever. So the next morning when i drank my phensedyl it was like "the first hit". A few hours later though i started to suffer from severe respiratory depression and i panicked thinking i was going to die

i took chlorpromazine later on a few occasions(only 25 mg) after that when i couldn't afford to buy more phensedyl cause the the chemists wouldn't give me more stuff on credit. I noticed that the chlorpromazine sedated me a lot more than the codeine usually did and i could make do with small doses of codeine without suffering any withdrawals for an extended period.
