Codeine 150mg - First proper experience - Blissful sedation with hints of anxiety

Hi All!

This is my first post on Bluelight (have been a lurker for many years) and I wanted to share my first real experience of codeine that I had last night and get some advice on where I should progress from here.

I recently acquired a 28 pack of 30mg codeine phosphate tablets (no other active ingredients) and decided to try out a few last night. The only experience I have with codeine is around 8 years ago, I would occasionally pop three co-codamol (30mg codeine and 500mg paracetamol per capsule) and me and a friend once tried CWE with about six of them, but never felt anything more than slightly sleepy/chilled out from them.

At around 18:00 I took three tablets (90mg) with a small glass of water and put some music on while they started to take effect. By 19:00 I was feeling quite sedated and a bit spaced out, my mood had lifted slightly but there was no sign of any euphoria, so I decided to take two tablets more bringing my total dose to 150mg. About 19:45 I started to feel very sedated and remembered I hadn't eaten since the morning so made myself a sandwich which I enjoyed (I didn't at any point feel the nausea some experience on codeine) and afterwards returned to laying on my bed and resumed my music. By about 20:30 I was getting very itchy and the sedation was coming in waves followed by a wave of mild euphoria (nothing like that of mdma but more like 2 grams of phenibut with no tolerance). I felt like I was breathing slower that usual and started to panic a bit so searched forums about if people had experienced this too (stupid idea) because afterwards the sedation and mild euphoria was tainted by anxiety. By around 21:30 the anxiety was also coming in its own separate wave, which was ruining the waves of sedation and bliss, so I decided to drink a small amount of alcohol to hopefully get rid of it (I know this can be dangerous but I thought my tolerance to alcohol is quite high and by this point felt my breathing was better) I drank about 50ml of vodka which definitely did the job and I was able to enjoy the rest of my codeine experience without the anxiety.

My questions are what dose should I try next to try to experience more euphoria? And should I drink a small amount of alcohol before taking the codeine or after again?
And how long should I wait until I take it again?

Thanks

Hey there, welcome, glad you joined. :)

You know, I was never able to really experience that opiate euphoria for years when I was younger. I kept thinking, what's the big deal? Then, one day, I got it. Fast forward 10 years later and I had been an opiate fiend for 10 years, eventually my life fell apart and I wished I could die every day. I found myself wishing SO HARD that I had never found that opiate euphoria.

Some people can take opiates from time to time and be fine. But if you have an addictive personality, or you're in emotional pain and trying to cover it up, there is a very strong chance that eventually you'll get addicted. Obviously no one intends to get addicted, and no one realizes it's starting to happen until it's already happened. It's an incredibly insidious addiction... opiate addiction was the worst thing I've ever gone through. I consider it a miracle that I've been free of it for going on 4 years.

I just have to say that when I see people posting about getting into opiates, so that hopefully I can prevent someone from going down the same path I did, because I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. <3 Maybe you'll be fine, but IMO it's not worth the risk, especially if you have an addictive personality.

But anyway, codeine is one of the weakest opiates and it also tends to cause a lot of itching (which is a histamine reaction). Opiates cause respiratory depression at higher dosages, which is why you were breathing slower. It's not something to worry about except when you're taking large doses of powerful opiates (it's the cause of death in opiate ODs, but 150mg of codeine won't cause nearly enough of it to worry. In fact I believe the only way people die from it is when they go unconscious and there is so much respiratory depression that they stop automatically breathing. If you're awake, you'll be able to choose to breathe).

It sounds like you had a pretty solid dose if you were itching and very sedated. Might be codeine isn't for you. You could try raising it by 1 pill (to 180mg) if you want to try to push it, or actually just taking 150mg all at once would be stronger than splitting it into multiple doses.

As for how long to wait, if you want to do it again, I'd give it at least a few days, better a week. Not for tolerance, but because you don't want to slip into a "every X days" habit, because generally that's how addiction begins. The every, say, 3 days becomes every 2 days, becomes every day.

Thanks for your reply and for the advice! I think I should be okay on the addiction side (I'm sure everyone says that though haha) but I've used phenibut for 3 years now and have always been careful to keep it to max once a week because I'm aware of how addictive it can be. Also I only have this one pack of codeine and don't see a way I could get anymore. As for the strong sedation I think it may have been due to not having an tolerance, and from what I have read 150mg is quite a large dose. I think I'll try it again in a week as you suggested.

Does anyone know if I'm safe to have a small amount of vodka (or even phenibut) to relieve any anxiety when taking codeine? And should i drink before/during or after? I'm thinking a few shots of vodka with 210mg of codeine, will this be safe? Thanks

Phenibut combines fine. Personally I dislike the alcohol/opiate combo, I find the alcohol kinda ruins the delicate opiate buzz, but some people like it. If you combine them, keep the alcohol doses low.

Some people find that phenibut makes opiates not as good but I disagree.
