Smell is a good way of knowing the cut, as pure will smell more than cut blow. The thing to look for is also sparkly sheen, even powder will have the iridescence similar to a pearl. Cutting agents don't sparkle.

Also some blow has a really clean high so trying it the first time with one line might not really tell you what's up.

Sorry, first paragraph is totally wrong, common misconceptoions though

Pure does not smell more than cut at all, in fact pure cocaine can have no smell at all.

Cutting agents do sparkle, particularly levamisole which is one of the most common and most harmful cuts
 
You can't tell pure cocaine just by looking at it (or smelling it), sorry mate, it's not happening. You have to test it with a GCMS or something.
