Stop resisting!
In these rough economic times, another pricey extravagance appears to be waning in South Florida: cocaine.

The city that gave rise to Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs has seen a decline in people seeking treatment for cocaine addiction or dying from the drug. Twenty five years after Miami Vice became part of the country’s cocaine culture lore, Miami is leading the nation in the beginning of the end of America’s three-decade cocaine epidemic, say experts.

The war on drugs had its biggest influence on the purity of cocaine, so drug users paid more and got less. And with a statewide unemployment rate hovering at 10 percent, the scourge that destroyed families and entire communities is being replaced with cheaper, easier to acquire narcotics, according to the country’s leading drug experts.

“It’s not disappearing, but it’s definitely declining,” said James N. Hall, Director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Substance Abuse at Nova Southeastern University. “People are getting half of what they used to get — and this is occurring in the middle of the economic downturn. Cocaine, the most expensive drug on a per-dose basis, is costing more.”

According to Hall’s drug-abuse trends report:

  • The number of people rushed to local emergency rooms with cocaine overdoses declined 14 percent from 2008 and 2009.
  • Last year, 549 people sought treatment for crack and powder cocaine addictions, down from 918 the previous year. That’s a startling 41 percent drop.
  • The number of cocaine overdoses in Miami-Dade County started declining steadily in 2007, when 281 people suffered cocaine-related deaths. Two years later, the number had dropped to 155. Last year’s number of cocaine deaths bumped back up to 198, but experts say that increase was actually the result of more people mixing cocaine with prescription drugs like Oxycodone.

I personally haven't really experienced the drug scene in FL but I've watched a couple documentaries about it. Not trying to say I know much about it, however, from what I did see, prescription opiates are pretty big there. I've never tried coke, only seen it twice and so I've never really run in those circles and thus haven't really known anything about availability or lack thereof. I will say that there are a few people that I've met that are recreational users that have tried it and stated that they have no interest in it as its just pricey and short lived for what it does. This makes sense, imo, as I just don't really see a point in coke...I mean, I have as little experience with meth but meth is long lasting in comparison to my knowledge.

compared to almost a decade ago, the cocaine quality in most parts of the Eastern Seaboard (I used to travel a lot) has slowly gotten less pure and less pure. I've never been too romantically involved with cocaine, but these last couple years, it has proved to be just about completely worthless to acquire. the fact that this is happening in Cocaine County, USA really is just a sign of those times

not to mention levamisole, a drug that severely weakens your immune system and makes you susceptible to all sorts of diseases/ailments/infections...

I know somebody who was doing a lot of coke daily, got angrulytosis from the levamisole, then one day his back started hurting so bad he was hospitalized. He had extremely high concentrations of calcium in his blood, and severely anemic. Further tests showed he had developed a fast-acting leukemia in his bone marrow (one of the targets levamisole attacks). He was no longer producing red blood cells. He got chemo therapy while his cancer progressively worsened over the next year until he died. 30 years old.

cocaine these days WILL kill you. for anyone who reads this. cocaine is total shit the entire country ought to boycott never buy levamicrap. Studies show up to 90% of the cocaine supply is tainted with it. which is pretty strange that's about what I guess customs and the border patrol catch nowadays with all the drug dog checkpoints and X-rays both at the border and inland.

you'd think at some point the cartels would tell themselves "maybe we ought to stop with this levamisole bullshit"

I'm sure they just arrive at that number by statistical analysis.

^I'm sure the number is pretty close ;)

I'm thinking the reason so much levamicoke is around is because the cartel(s) adding it are the cartel(s) like the sinaloas which have cut deals with the feds in the past.

shit after "fast & furious" it wouldnt surprise me if the CIA was still shipping the coke...

I think why most people are drawn to cocaine is just because its a nice pile of white powder you can snort with some friends along with alcohol.

There are not any other(that i know of) stimulants in a nice white powder form that you can snort and is as socially acceptable.

what's funny is in crack form it's pretty much the same thing however much less socially acceptable. There is just a stigma about crack... IME crack is just cocaine you do when you are tired of fucking your sinuses. has a bigger initial rush but overall the same high..

I get two or three degrees of magnitude higher smoking crack. And with powder, I don't spend 24-48 hours doing nothing but snorting. But crack: several times I've come home from work on a Friday and not put the pipe down until Sunday afternoon. I love crack. I love crack.

Funny but where i live (Atlantic Canada) there is no stigma around crack like there seems to be in the US. It's just something ya smoke when you've fucked your sinuses from years of snorting blow and pills :p . It still is the most popular drug here but the quality in coke has been going down alot even in the past few years. Unfortunately i took up IV coke after they started putting that godawful shit in the coke but fortunately i didn't let it get out of hand. Fuck cocaine right off.

I won't be sad to see it decline alot in use because it brought alot of bad elements into the drug scene up here.
