Cocaine for snow-blindness

Couldn't think of any other forum which this would belong in.

Anyway, i'm reading this book called 'Home of the Blizzard' about these guys in Antartica in the early 1900's. I'll copy a section from it which i am interessted in:

"Ninnis developed a touch of snow-blindness which,however, rapidly improved under treatment. The stock cure for this very irritating and painful affliction is to place tiny tabloids of zinc sulphate and cocaine hydrochloride under the eyelids where they quickly dissolve in the tears, alleviating the smarting, gritty sensation".

How exactly does that work, i've never heard of that before!

Well there's no way in fuck it's going to cure the actual blindness, but the coke probably acts to constrict blood vessels, like an instant anti-inflammatory.

Cocaine is still the anesthetic of choice for ocular surgery.
Snowblindness, rather ocular sunburn, is similar to welding flash. The UV burns the eye leaving the eye red and swollen with the sensation of sand in it. I got it so often working as a pipe fitter in the oil fields I kept a small bottle of the modern solution which is Zinc Sulphate for mild antibitotic effect and Cocaine HCl to anesthetize the eye while it heals. Used to get a bottle each month. saved ten and got a whole rail of blow<wow> out of them. worst fuckup as I was in misery with arc flash while I saved my meds. :lol: hardly worth it ,eh?
