Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug, and new research suggests another stimulant might just be the trick to helping people break the addictive cycle.

Researchers have shown a single dose of methylphenidate, a stimulant drug prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may normalize the nerve pathways that go haywire in cocaine addicts' brains.

"These findings may also be generalizable to other types of addiction," study lead investigator Dr. Rita Goldstein, a professor in psychiatry and neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, told CBSNews.com.

Might not be a total switch of one drug for another. I'm not sure exactly how ritalin works but perhaps just a few days of using ritalin would be enough to help, then it won't be needed anymore.

haha did I read that title right, I'm certainly no Einstein but come on.. also in other news, Vodka addiction may be cured by drinking Whisky.

Probably the same reasoning behind methadone maintenance therapy.

Get someone taking drugs of varying potency off of the street and onto a consistent pharmaceutical replacement so that they aren't riding a biochemical rollercoaster. In the case of street opiates, instead of a person bouncing between nodding off and being dopesick, the person is at a constant level that can be managed.

There might be an analogous case with cocaine and methylphenidate. Since cocaine and methylphenidate are both (S)NDRI's, one might argue that they're somewhat interchangeable.

I have experience with absolutely none of the above, so someone with personal experience will likely tell me that I'm full of shit.

You are. LMAO

Psychological addiction is manageable by abstinence and therapy... Cocaine is all in your head... Not your body.

Replacement therapy is only going to be detrimental... These people will still go bat-shit crazy.

This isn’t like opiates... Your body actually loves you after you get off stimulants... Your brain hates you and it will show it. You feel all mush for brains...

It’s only rebound fatigue...

For me, the high from cocaine and methylphenidate are almost identical. No doubt they can be interchanged like opioids can be.

The article is poorly worded. A single dose of methylphenidate wasn't theorized to abort addiction, but to temporarily suspend a binge and/or a craving.

This is the abstract.

Substitution therapy works great for opioid addiction. It's about time it's employed for stimulants as well.

My question is why?

You aren’t stopping people from being sick...

This can’t be solved the same way as opiates... There is no physical withdrawal to keep at bay...

It is a complete waste of time and effort.

This is NOT a COMPLETE waste of time and effort. It could be easily cured in other ways (cross the board legalization) but with the way our fucked up world is, that isn't changing anytime soon. These drugs because of the laws in place are sold by criminals that cut the shit with whatever they want (levimisole anyone?) I have seen pictures and videos of what some of these cuts can do to human flesh, I have seen the danger people are put in to get/use cocaine/crack. They are subject to dangerous drug dealers, other dangerous users, dangerous unclean product and they risk imprisonment with every half gram they buy.

Harm reduction - reducing unnecessary harm... having people TRY ritalin instead of cocaine may help 1/1000 addicts, but that is what they need, help. This isnt a perfect idea... far from it But to say it is a waste of time, if you ask me, is ignorant. If any new practice can reduce harm for that 1/1000 or even 1/1000000 it is absolutely worth the time and effort.

Not to mention ritalin is like kiddy coke. The effect is definitely somewhat similar. Trading one addiction for another is obviously not epic progress, but with the way the laws are, having something that is proven relatively safe (ritalin) dosed out in exact and unadulterated amounts could really help someone. Prevent them from ingesting bad cuts/other drugs, prevents the law and prevents the interaction with criminals.

Harm reduction? Give them more stimulants?

That is ridiculous...

Why give them more stimulants if:

1. There is no physical withdrawal.
2. You are still feeding a vicious cycle...
3. There will be a lot less methylphenidate for what it is actually approved for...
4. It is still a rather cardiotoxic drug to abuse... And, you are still blowing out there DAT... It would require a pretty good dosage for more seasoned users.

It makes no sense to have a stimulant replacement therapy... It will be way more harm reduction to give them abstinence...

1. Fatigue?
2. Classic conservative standpoint. If this were true, why is ORP so successful?
3. You can be assured corporate firepower will be all too eager to make up for any initial deficit
4. To abuse. Better than nothing. Its actually probably nueroprotective/largely benign in therapeutic doses.

Pleased to meet you Mrs. Reagan.

You do not become sick like an opiate... After a little rest period you are fine. The real depending factor on success is is it outpatient or inpatient?

It’s not “6 days of madness”... It all psychological...

Why give corporations more money?

Majority do abuse maintenance medication...

I’m saying meds is the wrong way for stimulant abuse...

And a big fuck you for calling me Mrs. Reagan...

Isn’t there a longer acting homologue? Another chemical related to this with a longer half life?

After rendering your points moot, instead of admitting that you're wrong on all accounts, you write a mix of ignorance, unfounded opinions, personal attacks, and speculations.

And with opiates you do not run the risk of dying. Why even provide treatment if they can recover without it? Further, why provide treatment for any drug addiction?

Realize, you're in effect saying:
-psychological addiction to stimulants cannot be effectively treated with medication, or rather, that its a mental disorder which can't be, uniquely as regards to such illnesses, defying psychiatric logic
-psychological addiction to stimulants is over after "a little rest period"
-stimulants are not physically addictive, yet still "blow out there DAT"
-I'm right because I'm right
-I do not need to provide sources for contentious claims
-do my research for me
-people who reveal inconsistencies in my argument or compare my viewpoints to someone I don't like should be insulted, presumably so that my integrity can be protected
-I should be agreed with despite my argument shooting off in several, often conflicting directions
-my reasoning defies logic

See a trend? Basically it boils down to you implying that you want to win a debate, not heal the sick.

better, comprehensive: http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0039830

Sends the entire basis of what little logic you had to the bottom of the sea.

First and foremost I apologize... The nancy reagan thing pissed me off.

We are on a forum, I will keep it as such. If you feel I haven’t proven anything I have said, it is your opinion.

It’s really up to the reader if they keep it or not. Not you or I have to agree, So I agree to disagree...

You are dealing with huge psychological issues here. Therapy is the answer not Ritalin... Therapy with the blocking drug mentioned in the article CGP3466B if it is safe after testing.

Feeding into the psychological issues while trying to help people get sober on stimulants is rather backwards. There is still going to be psychoses, confusion, the regular stimulant dangers, ETC... There is still going to be switching back and forth... Switching from one epidemic to another.. Which we do anyway right?

Ritalin is going to heavily desensitize these people to the actual reward of getting clean just like the cocaine... If you don’t feed them enough, and won’t give them more and more, they will run to get it elsewhere... Just like cocaine...

Stimulants lead to risk taking behavior in rural or uneducated populations seen with multiple stimulant drugs.

Tip of the iceberg... That’s just one state.

Not to mention that everyone is not going to just “Pop" these pills. With a potency similar to coke itself, yeah... You are going to need bigger doses.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC181133/

Out of all this... I still see this one good thing, and this one good thing only.

It will further reduce crime that already has dropped because of falling cocaine prices... Which will drop even lower...

http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-and-economy/2011/11/cocaine-plummeting-price-nationwide-drop-violent-crime/474/

You don’t heal the sick making them sicker... But if you are going to do it, make dissolvable pills or give us pure powder so we can all take the shit similar to the coke you are trying to replace...

After all, people will abuse it... No questions about it... Once you are a pickle, you won't be a regular cucumber ever again...

Doe methylphenidate cause reverse tolerance? I can’t figure that one out...
