As I have noticed ethylphenidate becoming more and more popular, I have been wondering about other possible prodrugs/metabolites which produce recreational effects of their own. As ethylphenidate is the product of the hepatic metabolism of methylphenidate and ethanol, and cocaine is similarly demethylated into benzoylecgonine, but with the presence of ethanol ethylbenzoylecgonine is produced, better known as cocaethylene. The combination of ethanol and cocaine is known for being more euphoric and longer lasting than cocaine alone, and seeing as how both methylphenidate and cocaine are Schedule 2, and the ethyl ester of methylphenidate is unscheduled, is it possible for the ethyl ester of cocaine, cocaethylene, to be synthesized on its own, and remain within the the law?
