The "bath salts" arrive in quarter-size plastic containers showing a sun lingering over a blue horizon and the promise "to energize your mind, body & soul."

These are not actually bath salts -- they're dangerous synthetic stimulants that look like cocaine, with similar effects.

When inhaled or ingested, the white powder can cause paranoia, hallucinations, convulsions and psychotic episodes.

They refer to Mephedrone as Methadrone in the link and as Methodrone in the article. They also refer to MDPV as MDVP.

Not only do they not know the names, they also claim that the drugs cause intense hallucinations

The American articles are even worse than the articles the UK media ran last year. Pathetic

2007 and 2008 was the real explosion of mephedrone worldwide.
Its availability in Australia is down dramatically as its too easily sniffed by dogs and customs is way past onto it hardcore. but it will come back as backyard synths.. not to say the chinese labs were that great. 99% pure was all a load of shit.

but it will be interesting to see in 20 years how popular the drug is, and telling our children found with meowz meowz about how our generation "founded" its abuse and then kicking them in the arse for calling it meow meow

Nobody pronounces mephedrone correctly though. I have almost never heard anyone say it with the necessary labiodental fricative feh, even among people who use the drug, so how can you expect CNN to get it right? I have certainly seen worse.

you tell 'm ham and take a gander at how the OP spelled embarrassing in the tag line !

pots calling kettles black and all . teenagers !!!

lol god I'm glad I decided to not become part of the public media, fucking morons

I think their preferred spelling was (oddly enough) "miaow miaow"...God knows why.

They're copying from us. It spread from there being methylone sold in packets under the brand name of "meow". Then it seemed to shift towards mephedrone and became "Miaow Miaow".

The media needs to start reporting news......

Like seriously...

You all need to stop talking about "the media" like it is one giant ideologically unified force, and recognize it as a series of discrete outlets that serve variety of purposes. The vast majority of journalists are ambivalent about the drug war and would just as likely approve the use and distribution of drugs if their editors thought that would make people buy papers or click on advertising banners.

Ooooohhh get you! You forgot to start your sentences with a capital letter! *Erects the stake*

The OP has a lot less of an obligation for grammar than the news article..

Fsk 'em... let 'em ban the RC's. People will complain, and then be free of the hassles and downsides of cheap, pure, potent, easily available chemicals that are way too easy to binge on, abuse and fuck up your life with.

Is there really a point to most of these substances? People do 'em, overdo 'em, complain how bad it sucks, then forget it all when the drug is gone & out of their system and suddenly it seems incredibly attractive again. And the cycle repeats.

Fuck it... I'll wave bye-bye to 'em & move on.

While mephedrone was big in the UK it killed one person.. cocaine deaths fell by 50% saving about 40 lives.

Not saying RC's don't have their upsides, as they do.

IMO, their downsides outweigh them tho. And it *never* seems so, cuz all people can think of is "having fun with them" again, then do 'em and have a lot of problems/very little fun, come down, and think "wow, I'd like to do that again, I had a BLAST last time and don't remember any significant problems". The shitz are weird that way. Coke is weird that way too, IMO.

^ It's the same with pretty much all drugs, no? RC's just mean new drugs.. could be safer, could be more dangerous, who knows? Each to their own?

Well, dopaminergics anyway. IMO/IME, opiate problems aren't so easily forgettable, although they can be denied.

Something about dopamine-based drugs that puts you into a sort of alternate reality during the high, and when you come down you forget what happened in that "other world" and make up a story that it was all awesome and start thinking about getting the drug again. I suspect it's dopamine-liking brain circuits that have nothing to do with memory or rational thought or even enjoyment of the high, and know nothing whatsoever but "more".
