I just searched the word Melatonin in the searchbar to see if it had come up that cherries have melatonin in them...

When I came across this post by Rexeh which quoted wikipedia :

"
Many psychoactive drugs, such as LSD and cocaine, increase melatonin synthesis. It has been suggested that nonpolar (lipid-soluble) indolic hallucinogenic drugs emulate melatonin activity in the awakened state and that both act on the same areas of the brain. It has been suggested that psychotropic drugs be readmitted in the field of scientific inquiry and therapy. If so, melatonin may be prioritized for research in this reemerging field of psychiatry. "

Does this mean that closed eye visuals are caused by a release of melatonin in your brain which technically would make you dream while you are awake?

If not how does it work?

Doubt it. The psychedelic experience of closed eye visuals has almost nothing in common with dreams IME.

From what I've heard, GABA system hallucinations (from amanitas) are closer to a dreamlike state than serotonergic hallucinations.

But I haven't done amanita personally.

If cherries had melatonin in them, wouldnt you trip balls if ate a whackload of cherries? Also if the whole dreaming thing were that simple, wouldnt scientists have figured it out first before you did?

Melatonin does give you more vivid dreams and more vivid hypnogogic images but these are not the same as the CEVs that you get from psychedelics like LSD or mushrooms IME.

IME I did find that while smoking and eating THC the CEVs I got were more like those of dreams but I am sure that a lot of this had to do with the THC and the fact that I was lying down and meditating and in an altered state complete with alpha waves and theta waves. THC does increase your alpha waves apparently.

I have been in an isolation tank like the type Dr. John Lilly used but I was totally sober at the time as I wasn't allowed to be on drugs before going in and I was wide awake yet in an altered state of consciousness and it was like dreaming/tripping and you do see visuals but it's totally different from tripping and dreaming too.

If any of you have ever explored or experienced subspace via bondage/S&M being in the tank was sort of like that but different in some ways and more dreamlike.

I wish that tank was still around so I could smoke and go in it.

It got removed and they are not that easy to find and I was able to go into it twice for free. :(

hallucinations are still not very well understood, from what i understand.

5htp --> melatonin in your body if your serotonin levels are proper im pretty sure. i think that this is suggesting that alot of hallucinogenics act on 5hta and 5htb receptors, and it can stimulate melatonin production. i take this as they will use melatonin alongside psychedelic drugs in future studies to see if it has an effect.
