off-the-label clonidine use

Hey all,
I am asking if anyone here knows about use of clonidine, an alpha-adrenergic antagonist and hypotensive drug, for its strong sedative side effects. I was told it was quite effective as a sleep aid. Anybody here who has used it, would you please share effectiveness, dosage used, and side effects?

Catapres is a fairly good sleep-aid. I'd say around the same as the common benzos. As far as side-effects you'll get a dry mouth and feel a little drowsy upon waking. Friend was prescribed this for his adhd and had to be careful, as it has some serious side effects when taken in large doses for children with adhd.
0.3mg in tablet form worked fine for me. I'd probably prefer a benzo like klonopin instead though.

I know that both in-patient and out-patiet detox / rehab cenetrs use this drug to help compat opiate withdrawal. In reality it's a medictation used to reduce hyperttension, but obviously has other "positive" effects. I know if he past the have prescribed a .1mg dose, 2-3 times a day.

Apparently, Clonodine binds to your opiate receptor and somehow "stimultates" then, well. at least enough to ease some of the discomfort from Opiate withdrawal.

I didn't really enjoy it, I two would just prefer a benzo. I do know some people that enjoy drinking on them but I don't. I also believe that they thin your blood as well.

I wouldn't call it recreational...so people who were looking into it for recreational purposes (such as the person above me?)...would most defintely be disappointed. It is pretty benzo-like...will knock you out much more effectively though, especially when used on a stimulant comedown. I find it better than klonopin which leaves me feeling groggy the next day.

this is great sleep aid at frist. i found i bulit a tolernce to it went from .5 to 4 mg in a year and at 4 mg you dont wake up. i dont recomed it. i think its a bad drug period to tell the truth. oh and i did i metion if you take it long enofgh good like trying to sleep with out it. took me forever to kick this shit.

As someone mentioned, when I was in the first medical detox I attempted for heroin I was wearing three Clonodine patches (not sure of the dosages), and wasn't really sure what they did at the time other than "ease withdrawl." Then once I started my buprenorphine program roughly 4 weeks ago I was given a Clonodine script and the information packet that came with it states it may be used for combatting withdrawl effects or reducing high blood pressure (so yes it does think your blood to whoever asked). Oh yeah, I'm on .2 mg as of now, but very rarely use it...it's an alright med for helping withdrawls, IMO.

Someone mentioned above in an earlier post that Clonidine binds to the opiate receptors.

Just curious, does this produce an opiate like effect that is less stimulating than most other opiates? If so does this have any potential for recreational purposes?? What kinda doses would one take for such a cases?

This is purely out of curiosity simply because I have never heard of Clonidine being used for this. I doubt there is much recreational value. Even if there are any I would suspect people would be better off seeking their opiate pleasures from the more dominant opiates, you know what they are. Anyways I'm out....

Peace, Illicit

^^^ but it can help you sleep??? Damn, my dad has been taking this for years and I have had insomnia for like 2 months now. . .shit, if i would have know it help you sleep i would have been getting at least more than a few hours of sleep by now.

does anyone know how many mg's is appropriate just to get to sleep? Honeslty i am running on fumes here. . .2 hrs a sleep a night and i still have class. . . :(

Trust me in now way is this a recreational drug. I am currently going through an out-patient detox program and the meds consist of 1mg Klonopin every few hours (the doc said to use my judgement, but how many junkies do you know that use "good judgement?) He also prescribed .01mg clonodine to be taken twice a day, preferrrably in the am and then again around dinner time. I have also been taken roughly 800mg of Motrin every few hours to alleviate the muscle pain / discomfort, as well as Loperamide (Immodium AD) 6mgs and few times a day. Oh, and to sleep at night, I have been taking Sominex (thanks to a previous PhreeX post) and this magical combo seems to work wonders. I have been clean now for 5 days, feel more clear headed than ever, and even the cravings have become bearable.

Oh, and to try to answer an above question regarding clonodine, I guess it is a medication used to treat hypertension, but has been useful in helping to reduce some of the discomfort associated with Opiate withdrawal...

Hope that helps.

Chris

Clonidine comes in doses of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mg (100, 200, and 300 mcg) per 15 mg tablet, according to rxlist. My pills are white, scored, have 15 C imprinted on each side of the score, and have a weird arrow imprint on the other face of the pill. The packaging is silver foil and reads Catapres 150 I.P. 0.150 mg. I guess that means my pills are 150 µg/0.150 mg, but that dosage isn't listed on any website.

My intention for using clonidine is purely as a sleep aid. I am not seeking any benzo-like recreational effects.

I know that many of you have stated that Clonidine has no recreational value. Now I'm not necessarily arguing with any of you, because my experience with it just last nite was by no means what I would call recreational. However, others might have found what I experienced to be fun, but whatever.

Anyways, I took .4mg of Clonidine. I expected nothing and went about my usual boring life. After about 30 mins. I began to become very dizzy, and then to the point of feeling extremely intoxicated, so much so that I could barely walk. Having problems standing up, I ended the whole ordeal short and just went to sleep as I don't like the idea of not being able to walk. It's not exactly my idea of a good time. But to the point, Clonidine does have some effects, at least it did on me. These might not be safe, and I would definetly never do this again, but now people know.

Peace, Illicit

my Doctor told me that if you feel dizzy on them you should lie down asap, b/c it means your blood pressure has gone very low. IMO they are similar to Beta Blockers, both have their uses but not in any rec way. BTW mine are little blue round tabs 25mcg called DIXARIT
