Hey I am currently tapering off of Methadone (down too 46 from 85) and having a hell of a time. I also just started Escitalopram (Cipralex in Canada) since I have anxiety which obviously worsens as I get off the Methadone. The down side is SSRI's have a ramp of period of a few weeks where anxiety and sleeplessness is amplified, and I just had my first panic attack in my life.

Anyways I have heard a lot of good things about Clonidine for Opioid withdrawls. It is an Anxiolytic, that lessens insomnia, RLS, Flushing/sweatyness, leg pains, and pretty much everything else you get during WD's.

Has anyone had any experience using Clonidine like this?

I dont have personal experience with clonidine but it is used for opiate withdrawal alot as it helps with the symptoms, mainly hypertension. All the other beneficial effects are from this lowering of blood pressure ie. Less anxiety symptoms like shakes and irritability. It also has a mild sedation aspect which will help immensely when you feel like climbing the walls. However I would asvise you use it under medical supervision as blood pressure meds are not to be played A with and good luck with your detox.
A z-drug such as zopiclone would be more helpful on a short term basis for insomnia as clonidine does make insomnia worse for some.

Clonidine is known to be very effective for opiate withdrawal, particularly with the sweats and anxiety. It should be dosed cautiously though because it can drop your BP severely.

This has been talked about a lot. Use the search function for more info.
