Clonazepam cause an extreme rise in tolerance within 2 months of daily use (as prescribed) for me. I also had terrible withdrawals when I switched to Xanax XR (same dose). This experience and some experiences of close friends have given me a very negative opinion for clonazepam. Despite what doctors recommend, I don’t believe Klonopin should be taken every day. The half-life is too long for that frequent of dosing and tolerance rises way to fast.
I have been using Xanax for much longer and continue to use it to this day. For my needs (sudden anxiety & panic attacks) Xanax is very useful. I tend to only dose once or twice a day and fight hard to keep my dose very low. Even though Xanax works well for my needs, I would be hesitant to recommend it. I believe that it is truly a drug to be taken as needed (i.e. as little as possible). It can be extremely addictive and the potential for abuse is very high. It’s a different kind of abuse than clonazepam IMO. The few times I did increase my dose of clonazepam I was looking for relief that I couldn't get. When I increase my dose of Xanax I'm looking for a fun time and I already have relief. If you are someone who seeks the recreational effects of drugs, then avoid Xanax unless you have real self-discipline.
Note: My Xanax use is .5mg - 1mg/day currently. High doses of Xanax will have the same problems as high doses of Klonopin. It is very important to keep your benzo doses low (lower than prescribed even).
