A small handful of doctors in China are going to extremes to rid people of addiction. As a last resort against intractable addiction to heroine and alcohol, these doctors are attempting to erase motivation by erasing a part of the addict’s brain. And they are doing it in the face of worldwide condemnation, and in the name of scientific research.

The procedure involves drilling small holes into the skulls of patients and inserting long electrodes which extend down to the part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. This area, often referred to as the “pleasure center” of the brain, is the major nucleus of the brain’s reward circuit. The neurotransmitter dopamine stimulates cells here to elicit the pleasurable sensations we get from eating fatty foods, getting a job promotion, or taking heroin. Electrical current is passed through the electrodes which kill the cells of the nucleus accumbens. By ridding the addicts of their pleasure centers, doctors hope to rid them of their addictions as well. The surgery is performed while the patients are awake to minimize the chance of damaging regions involved in sensation, movement or consciousness.

The stigma associated with drug addiction is particularly strong in China where thousands are executed every year for drug trafficking. Thus, the drastic cure might be considered commensurate with the sickness. In 2004, however, the Chinese Ministry of Health banned the procedure after they determined that there wasn’t enough scientific evidence to show that it was safe in the longterm.

But, according to Time, the ablation surgery has been performed at least 1,000 times since the 2004 ban. The reason: some doctors were allowed to continue the procedure for research purposes. And making good on their scientific pursuit, doctors at the military Tangdu Hospital in Xi’an last month published a study documenting the “long-term outcome and changes of the personality and psychopathological profile of opiate addicts after bilateral stereotactic nucleus accumbens ablative surgery.”

This is some Dr. Mengele shit here. Do the patients volunteer for it?

I wonder if instead of destroying the pleasure centers, is it possible to amplify them? Say a procedure existed in which a surgeon can drill into the basal nuclei and implant a device that would bring perpetual beatitude and delectation. Would it be popular? Illegal? Would a patient who elected such a procedure be looked down upon by society? What would the Pope say about it?

I can't imagine any addict or any human, for that matter, agreeing to do this and be one of the first also.

I would bet that this is being done as a 'punishment' for repeat drug offenders.

Anyone who hears "we are going to drill into your skull while you are awake and solder your reward/pleasure centre so that you stop doing something you chose to do" Should run in the opposite direction (If they aren't already shackled)

China constantly surprises me.

Perhaps most disturbingly, 53 percent of the patients demonstrated some change in personality, which the authors described as “mildness oriented.”

Yay, for augmenting your citizens to create a more manageable mild population!

Great! Now, instead of having issues experiencing pleasure that's not drug-induced, these people will not be able to feel pleasure at all. Well, at least they won't be on drugs!

That is some fucked up shit. China is Kafka's wet dream.
Forced social control through brain surgery?
Taking away pleasure permanently because, well, "those people were irresponsible with their pleasure"?

I remember learning about a case where they implanted electrodes in a guy's brain and gave him a switch to activate them. Pushing the switch would give him an orgasm. He used the switch so much than within a year he had burned out that part of his brain entirely, so that he would never be able to experience orgasm again.

certainly a kafkaesque technique

I think allowing people to continue being addicts in many cases is superior to this

I hate junkies but I would rather be junkie myself that have hole drilled in my skull and my neurons fried with electricity...

srsly wtf

I smell Chinese government propaganda. Whether or not this is actually happening is almost beside the point. I doubt it's widespread in any case, or ever will be. This is just the Chinese government (and or national physicians' association) using the news media to send an a bone chilling, Orwellian message to drug addicts and alcoholics that they will NOT be coddled on taxpayer Renminbi if they just can't kick their habits.

Not that I'm apologizing for the Chinese for dealing with the problem this way. They're a very civilized people overall. But this is pretty consistent with their overall hard knock approach to psychiatric illnesses, which I've just never been able to appreciate.

Okay, fuck China. Someones probably gonna give me the whole speech about how it's a wonderful place and it's people are great blah blah, which i'm sure is correct.

But eh, death penalty for drug trafficking? shit like this? that's another country added to my no-go list. :)

China has some amazing history and aesthetic qualities (in several parts) but its politics is corrupt at least and may be more broken than we know; its hard to maintain a strong country with all of its illiberalism.

Fixed.

It's probably happening, and it's probably being done on prison inmates. In China you lose the right to refuse medical procedures once you become incarcerated. The state does most of its experimenting on prisoners and the mentally disabled (who can't refuse).

We can't let this country ever become completely in charge of world economy or policy. They will fuck everyone over. The U.S. is bad but better the devil you know.

A country that forces mothers to kill their unborn children...why am I not surprised that it is doing lots of other massively fucked up shit?

Gee, should I be nervous?
