This morning China executed another Filipino. This one was carrying 1.5kg of heroin for some African guy. He had made several trips and simply caught a bad break in 2008. They don't even tell the inmate until a couple of hours before. They only learn they will die that day when a couple of loved ones show up outside their cell for a 45 minute, heartfelt chat.
After his family visit they drove him to a court, where they read off his sentence again, and then drove him two hours to another prison where they gave him a lethal injection. He is rather lucky. The three that were executed last, two Filipinas and a Filipino, also for heroin, had gotten the usual bullet in the back of the head in their prison courtyards. He got a trip out of it.
The thing is, you have a country where most people live on less than 2,000 US a year- whilst supporting huge families- and some guy offers you 5 or 6K US to simply carry a bag or swallow some condoms- PLUS you get to go abroad, well it is easy to see why it happens over and over. It would be like offering the average American 300,000 US to smuggle.
Anyway, at least they abolished the Death Penalty here, though I reckon life in a Flip prison is a few shades worse than Lethal Injection. In reality, if you have money it isn't too bad and very easy to get out of. Anyway, the escape tunnel I wrote about recently? Forthe two Swedish cyber porn kings sentenced to life? The property owner AND the man who leased it are being charged. Sucks bigtime if the owner was an absentee landl-rd. I own a shitload of land here and who can say what is going on on all of it?
