Chinese police have arrested 12,125 people during a crackdown on the sale of narcotics online and have confiscated more than 300 kg of illegal drugs, state news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.

Police were tipped off to the scale of the problem after uncovering chatrooms in the two western cities of Lanzhou and Xian that were being used to peddle drugs, it said.

"Newcomers were only allowed to enter the chat room after being introduced by 'acquaintances' and taking drugs live via webcam," Xinhua cited a police officer as saying.

Police began detaining suspects in early September, the report added. The youngest was 14, it said.

"Criminal suspects turned to the Internet as it is harder for them to be detected that way," it said.

Websites must "take responsibility in fighting such illegal activities" and new laws be drafted to cope with this new problem, Xinhua added.

Any thoughts on how this is gonna affect the western world? I'm guessing availability of certain RCs is gonna decrease.

That was my first thought, too. I believe also that the vast majority of the world's methoxetamine is produced by Chinese labs.

Is that what they're talking about though, or the more usual illegal drugs?

Anyway, Jesus that's a lot of people.

Isn't China where every "RC" comes from? From Phenazepam to MXE to 5-MeO-xxx to the 2C-X's ??

12,000 people arrested from online evidence?

If they were just arresting everyone who entered a chatroom from a certain IP or something similar they probably arrested a lot of innocent people as well

I'm sure that was the least of their worries.

MDMA production in Canada, the primary source of MDMA in the United States, is high and possibly increasing, fueling a rise in MDMA smuggling through the U.S.-Canada border. MDMA production in Canada is very high and may be increasing. According to RCMP, 18 MDMA laboratory incidents22 were reported in Canada in 2007, a figure equal to the highest number ever recorded. RCMP further reports that most of these laboratories were operated by Asian criminal groups that acquire bulk quantities of precursor chemicals from China. According to the RCMP, all of the MDMA laboratories seized in Canada in 2007 were superlabs.23 The high level of production reported in 2007 has continued in 2008. For example, during one incident in June 2008, Canadian law enforcement officials seized one of the largest MDMA laboratories ever discovered in Canada. The laboratory contained more than 200 kilograms of pressed tablets and more than 100 kilograms of MDMA powder, sufficient to produce more than one million MDMA tablets in total.24

your right, but tham Canadians get their stuff from China :(

China has so many people that 12,000 is somehow about equivalent to 1,200 in the US.
What's more, most were probably users, not dealers.
I somehow doubt that that small number will affect the international drug trade.
Also, depending on how distorted their use of "narcotics" is, these people may have been doing heroin, not RCs.
Last I heard, meth was very popular in China, but RC use was not, so I guess that it may have been meth, rather than heroin.
In any case, I suspect that the RCs won't be affected by this.

They got to be talking about all the Chinese sites carrying cocaine, heroin, PCP and every kind of illegal drug you can think of. Don't even order from that lot. You have no idea what they will send you if they deal in that line.

Additionally it says how the people would get initiated over a webcam and use a chat room. Wouldn't you need to know how to speak Chinese (Mandarin?) to do this? Or at least be dealing with a person/website that has an understanding of Chinese and English.?

If I was on cam with someone from China, who didn't know English, I wouldn't know what they wanted me to do unless they were skilled at charades.
