Children are being prescribed mind-altering “chemical cosh” drugs for conditions such as shyness and mild social anxiety, behaviour experts have warned.

By Graeme Paton, Education Editor 1:33PM GMT 21 Jan 2011

Young people are routinely being given medication to treat normal childhood conditions, it was claimed, despite fears over their long-term health.

The disclosure came as it emerged that the number of eight- to 13-year-olds on drugs such as Ritalin has soared seven-fold since 1997.

In many cases, pupils are being put on medication in an attempt to manage serious behaviour problems.

But Dave Traxson, a senior educational psychologist who works in schools in the West Midlands, warned that children were increasingly prescribed drugs for “normal” conditions.

“I feel very strongly that the time is right to challenge the growing practice of medicating our children for displaying behaviours and thought processes that until recently would have fallen within the normal range,” he said.

“In my region, there has been a huge growth of children being diagnosed with bipolar disorders, and a growth in the numbers given strong drugs.

“Doctors seem to be trying to shift more and more children into clinical treatment and this is very dangerous.”

anyone who hasn't watched the Louis Theroux documentary America's Medicated Kids needs to ASAP. brilliant stuff that will blow any sane person's mind

It makes sense to give them drugs for shyness.
I would also give them drugs for incorrect political philosophies, lack of responsibility, and generally any anti-social tendencies as evidenced by "individuality".

Slowly, slowly, everyone will become more and more like Sarah Palin.
Only then will this be a great country/world.

I would also highly recommend checking out that documentary! Excellent stuff. Anything by Mr. Theroux is usually quiet interesting and thought provoking!

for god sake why dont they just start shoving pills down there throtes as soon as their born :\

or shoot them up?

or better yet, toss'em down the well! the world's overpopulated anyway.

System Crash here we come!

The problem is doctor's just get bored and envious by kids going to illicit merchants for their drug needs, they want to be their special friend and buy THEIR dope not the street dealers. that way "order kills chaos like a whore"

my fellow americans [im canadian], the article is actually British. the UK is at the forefront of society control and PhilipKDickian neoneonazi type BS. the US learns "human sheep maintenance" from their former masters, and the England germ learns how to keep being an empirical johnny, albeit Invisible.

^Do some real research, or don't bother posting. Consider this a prelude to a world of hurt.

Though psych meds for kids, not a big fan.

i find it a bit odd how doctors push certain drugs on people - anti-depressants, ritalin. they hate benzos and opiates - but they used to love them. most doctors are dumber than their patients it seems.

Because then you cant hear then say "thanks for those really awesome drugs mom/dad" You have to wait till they can say "i am tweaking hard!"/"i'm tripping balls"

Ten years from now, doctors will be prescribing medical marijuana to skinny 6 year olds to help them gain weight.

^^^^^I hope so, is that better or worse than rxing amphetamines to hyperactive kids?

Haha I was kidding. I hope that doesn't happen. No kids would ever need medical marijuana. Some kids do need amphetamines, but they are definitely WAY over prescribed.

I find it very concerning that anyone of sound mind believes that there are children who need amphetamines. That's absolute crap. Nobody needs amphetamines.

just out of curiosity, do any other countries prescribe straight up dextroamphetamine and methamphetamine to young kids besides america?

^A little rough, I know. If I had some real time I would go to the trouble of providing a blizzard of research that backs up my anger, though for now I'll go with a half-hearted apology, for the sake of a Greenlighter.

^^^^You bastard!!! :X

Also, I know that no one needs amphetamines, but some kids would do horribly without them.

yeah, lots of countries still RX d-amp
methamp no i dont think though, the US is one of the only places that still prescribes that
