Child dies after mother puts methadone in sippy cup

wow people can't even fucking read an article before commenting, who cares what the title says, try reading dickheads.

Yes, it's fucked up. yes, the mother should never be around children again, but slimvictor, why would you stick up for someone like that? She's an addict with no regard for herself, others or her environment. She doesn't deserve capital punishment or methadone treatment, she deserves nothing. She should live in solitude 24 hours a day for the rest of her life. Personally, I think the agonizing thoughts of what her existence has become would be the most painful torture she could endure; its easy to imagine it.

I disagree with your assumptions. Leaving a container with drugs in it on the top of one's dresser seems pretty safe in general when the child is small enough to use a sippy cup. 2-year olds can't reach the top of the dresser, even with the help of a chair (which they are only slightly likely to be able to utilize to extend their reach in the first place). Let's face it: 2-year olds are closer to pigs than to adult humans in terms of intelligence. The really weird factor may be that the kid managed to reach the top of the dresser in the first place.

Notice I am saying "may be"... If I saw that the dresser was in easy reach of the kid, I would be more likely to want to blame the girlfriend.

dresser doesnt mean its tall. it could be the short long one or the skinny tall one. dont you know that? the girlfriend obviously meant harm,

Actually, my intention is not to stick up for her personally, but for the policy of "innocent until proven guilty". (more on this below)

A lot of people here have declared her guilty without knowing what really went on. That is very sad, to me. She might, a least partially, be a victim as well - the victim of a horrible accident, and then of ignorant people's blame.

I am aware that a variety of shapes of furniture can be called "dressers", but why would you assume that the girlfriend's is a short one?

What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

To be truthful, I care less about this theoretical policy than about people's individual moral values. To point a finger and lay the blame without knowing the facts seems truly ridiculous to me. I seem to me on a bit of a crusade in this thread to get people to think a bit more deeply - probably because I don't really want to share this earth with an ignorant mob, to be blunt.
If we can refrain from judging others until we have the full evidence, our world will clearly be a better place.
Here, it looks more like a witch hunt than anything else.

I'm not saying this because I am trying to push the idea of religion or god on anyone, but rather because I can fathom a higher power being OK with the horrific things that go on in our daily lives. Not because this higher power would be sadistic, but because it would create depth and meaning to people's lives due to the contrast of positive and negative experiences.

I agree with this. However, I would add that what seem like horrific things to us may not be horrific to the "universal being", since his/her logic would certainly not look like our own.

yeah theres really no argument here.. she shouldn't have had methadone in a sippy cup I would never put anything but juice or milk in my childrens cups its common sense!!! also I know from firsthand experience I am a dad and I can tell you that a 2 year old can easily climb a dresser young kids are extremely sly and crafty.... if you put something enticing in front of a child and walk away most likely that child's going to try and get it.... no one should be defending this monster someone this ignorant shouldn't have had children in the first place

^ I am also a dad, and I also know firsthand about children's behavior.
However, it is not true that all or even most 2-year olds "can easily climb a dresser".
It depends on the size of the dresser as well as other conditions in the surrounding environment - was there a chair right next to it? Was there a long carpet in the room that made it difficult to push a chair across the floor? Is the child particularly athletic, or the opposite? Etc.
We do not have this information.
Also, the girlfriend was NOT the boy's mom, and may have been assuming something that you or I would not assume.
I did not read in the article that she put the cup "in front of the child and walked away".
You seem to be assuming a lot.

jesus christfag on a stick8o

she made a mistake. if this was an intentional killing, i think she'd need psychiatric help more than punishment (punishment will only make her more likely to repeat any crimes, in and out of jail, and serves no other purpose but your petty anger.)

if it was unintentional (we've all made silly mistakes that could potentially have been disastrous) she'll live with the consequences regardless, and the only "punishment" she deserves is what's reasonably required to deter others from doing the same.

which may be near nothing at all... people aren't going to be less likely to accidentally kill a child because this woman is made an example of. and people don't tend to like killing children anyway.
She's an addict with no regard for herself, others or her environment
yeah... that's why she goes to the methadone clinic 8)

way to stereotype those of us dependent on chemicals. aka probably around half of bluelight...

well for perspective my wife and her sisters were routinely given vodka before bed by their father throughout their youths. Fucker didn't even get them Smirnoff or anything halfway decent, but more like Popov or Senator's Club or something equally hideous.

slimvictor my youngest of 2 girls is known to pull the drawers out of here dresser like stairs and climb it we had to clear everything off the top of the dressers because she was grabbing everything off of them.... furthermore I have seen many children aged 2 who will and can climb most anything... and it says clear as day that she left the cup in the bedroom so its common sense that she would have walked away from the sippy cup she certainly didn't stand by the cup and keep her eyes on it

either way a child died from an OD off that girls methadone. whether it was intentional or unintentional, it still SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED in the first place. Those are things that you PREVENT from happening, and when you dont PREVENT them, or ALLOW them to happen its called manslaughter.

Slimvic are you a lawyer or a used car salesman or marketing exec by chance? You have a nice way with words, an ability to make someone believe whatever you want them to. not saying youre wrong, I actually somewhat agree with you, Im actually complimenting you

I'm with slimvictor on this, there really is not enough information to make assumptions like you all are doing. There has to be more to this than we read; knowing how America works, they wouldn't just charge her with manslaughter out of nowhere. While I don't think keeping methadone in a sippy cup is a good idea by any means, there's some key information we aren't told through this article

The boy's father is supportive of this woman and believes it to be an accident, I think that right there says something about this

to those arguing for absurd punishment of the woman...

have you ever been A) too high, B) too drunk, C) too tired, D) too emotionally exhausted, or E) too burned out, that you made a rather absurd mistake?

that happened here, and she got the 1% probability of the worst-case scenario happening. if it was you in such a situation, your arguments may differ.

Anyone who has ever watched a 2 year old can tell you that you cant leave stuff like that laying around. Even more so when its in something the baby drinks out of!! Who in there right mind puts methadone in a sippy cup when they know there is a 2 year old around? The fact that she put it in the sippy cup is enough for me to think she is guilty.
