Mayor Rahm Emanuel is throwing his formidable support behind a plan to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.

If the City Council goes along, Chicago cops will be free to issue a ticket with a fine ranging from $100 to $500. The tickets would apply to people caught with 15 grams of pot or less.

Last fall, Ald. Danny Solis (25th) proposed a ticket carrying a $200 fine and a 10-gram trigger.

Currently, those caught with small amounts of pot face a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,500 fine.

In a press release, the mayor said writing pot tickets “allows us to observe the law while reducing the processing time for minor possession of marijuana — ultimately freeing up police officers for the street.”

Something I think isn't fair (other than weed being illegal) is the arbitrary numbers they throw onto weed. I was arrested a while back with a charge of 1-2 oz, but those oz cost me less than 7 grams of dank would have, because they were schwag. 15 grams would be a pretty good amount of dank, more than I would typically carry on me. 15 grams of schwag is a pretty small bag, pretty much the minimum amount of schwag I ever buy.

How do the piggies know what 15 grams is? Do they have to just eyeball it and guess or do they carry around scales or what? "Officer's discretion" probably.

FUCK THIS! I WANT TOTAL LEGALIZATION! Not this nonsense of fining people with one joint for $500 for fucks sake!

In Massachusetts it is a $100 fine for amounts under an oz. $500 is a lot, and 10-15g really isn't a huge amount, especially of mid-to-low grade stuff.

We have a similar system here and it seems to help. It's not legalization, but it's progress.
