Chicago may decriminalize marijuana

Several Windy City councilmen said Thursday they plan to introduce a local law that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana in order to cut costs and free up police to handle more serious crimes.

Chicago police make about 23,000 arrests each year for possession of the drug, a misdemeanor which nevertheless carries stiff punishment of up to six months in jail, a $1,500 fine and a criminal record.

Under the new law set to be introduced next week, people caught with less than 10 grams of marijuana would instead face a $200 fine and up to 10 hours of community service.

Well that's a little good news added to my day! Hopefully it passes as it's just another step in the right direction.

Only time will tell when we'll be seeing these similar rulings being passed in all states.

Jesus, 23,000 arrests a year?

That's a lot of law enforcement resources and city money that's being tied up for no damn reason. Glad to read that the powers that be are actually considering this...

Don't let the article fool you. This is for economic reasons ONLY. They are about to cut Amtrak funding by 60% too. It's great to see the change and all, but IL is about to do some VERY extreme things to save some money. Cook County decriminalized pot a long time ago, and most major urban areas are following suit. My county (Grundy) is a neighbor of Cook, and what they are doing is telling police to take pot arrests on a case by case basis. Grundy is also in the hole much worse than a lot of other counties in IL.

DOn't get me wrong, it's good these things are passing. It's the right thing to do. But for all the wrong reasons

^The police here have been doing that for years (the case by case basis, basically means if you have a personal amount they either take your weed and let you go or just take your weed).

I'm glad things are changing.

Wonder how long it will be for the other states to follow............hopefully soon & I stopped smoking years ago. Hmm.....might start back up if I can get pure sativa, then were talking........:)

I figured monetary reasons would be the first for most places to decrim, as sad as that is. Decrim/Legalization should happen because it just makes sense, not because economies are floundering.

MARIJUANA WILL NEVER BE LEGALIZED UNLESS WE THE PEOPLE TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR GOVERNMENT...

Yo get it with me, I deal with reality, loosen yo mind to the truth and don't get mad at me!

too bad the state and feds will still be more than happy to bust folks.

and the city PD will probably still target anyone with money, so they can seize their assets.

MARIJUANA WILL NEVER BE LEGALIZED UNLESS WE THE PEOPLE TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR GOVERNMENT... This is just people trying to do the right thing but the US gov't will NEVER EVER EVER EVER make pot or any other drug legal. Why not? Because the US gov't is the DRUG DEALER.. its a big fucking scam, they ship in it, sell it you, then bust you and take away all your rights.. everyone knows the CIA put crack in the ghettos to keep the black man down and create chaos.... do none of you see this?

That's a pretty radical belief there, man. Not calling you down or anything, I mean anythings plausible but I think it's more about the pharmaceutical industry. Pot will never be legalized because it too good of a medication. They have tried numerous times (and failed) to create a synthetic version that would alleviate as many ailments as cannabis naturally does, with no extra side effects, and more importantly, something they can patent. And since they can't patent a plant, they're gonna keep force feeding us pills and raking in the cash.

Either way, decriminalization is a start... I guess... I'm pretty fortunate here in Canada where it's decriminalized almost everywhere. I doubt I would even get fined for personal possession.

^I've been caught rolling/smoking joints by cops in and near Montreal and never once even had my drugs confiscated. hell, I've even been arrested for something non-drug related only to have a resin-caked pipe given back to me upon release with a comment along the lines of ''We know what you use this for''. By the provincial Quebec police none the less, who have a reputation of being real hard-asses.

I've never had any run ins with the cops concerning drugs (knock on wood) but my friend told me about a time she sold some weed to a friend in a 7-11 parking lot. Walked up to the window, dropped it in, took the cash and the cops immediately rolled up. They didn't say ANYTHING to her and only told her friend to keep it in his pocket until he got home. They proceeded to walk into sev and by coffee or some shit, hahaha. I think it was a quarter, but I'm not exactly sure.
