I know that this has been mentioned here before, but it's definitely worth bringing up again.
Prescriptions for Narcan (Naloxone) are available from the Chicago Recovery Alliance (the needle exchange people). For those of you who don't know what Narcan is, it can bring someone out of an opiate overdose. Very useful--if your friend falls out--lips turning blue, can't be revived, etc--you just shoot them up with a few cc's of Narcan, and it will (hopefully) bring them back.
I'm not sure how the CRA Vans in the city handle the dispensing of Narcan, but I deal with one of their reps who work in the suburbs. I live in DuPage County & meet up with Suzy from CRA every few weeks to make an exchange. The last time I saw her she was able to give me some Narcan. Basically, she sat with me for 5 minutes to run down exactly how to deal with an OD & how to use Narcan. Then she gave me a bottle of it along with a prescription--just in case I'm hassled by the cops. She's got a supply of Narcan in her trunk--and it's free to any addict who wants it! And every addict, or occassional partier should have a bottle--just in case...
Also...Suzy asked me to round up other suburban Addicts together. The guy in charge of the needle exchange wants to get a focus group together to find out how they can better serve the suburban junkie. There was talk of getting $20 or a free dinner to participate. I'll try to get more details the next time I talk to her...
