it's one of those boring sunday nights again so i thought that i'd play around with some things i had laying around my room.
i remembered a post on here or somewhere else that said you can make a freebase out of almost any chem that has HCl in it. i happened to have a bottle of ephedrine in my room and right on the label it said epedrine HCl.
i put some in a glass vial and added a little baking soda to it and put in a lil bit of water. when i heated it, it started to foam and make boiling noises and then popping noises. can someone tell me what reaction is happening in the vial and if ephedrine freebase is something that could be entertaining.
spanx fellow chem geeks ;p

I really don't think you can ghetto freebase even pure ephedrine HCL....and I doubt that you have ABSOLUTELY PURE hcl powder; there could be a lot of secondary chemical reactions and impurities left in your final product if all you do is crush up pills with ephedrine hcl in them, add baking powder, and smoke.
you may have to do extractions before and after the freebasing, and baking powder might not be able to do the trick here.

Ok....You can freebase any hcl, your turning a polar substance into a non-polar one. But this doesn't nessisarily mean your outcome will be smokeable product. You wont beable to do it with the ephedrin. Not everything is freebased the same way as cocaine. You'd need to look at the specific chemistry involved in removing the HCL atom from the compound. In short, don't even try, the outcome wont be ANYTHING you can USE. If you can even do it at all without a lab.

You can make the freebase of most drugs with H-Cl at the end of the name. That means that the drug is the Hydrochloride Salt of the actual molecule. That means that the molecule has a basic group (usually nitrogen) and it has been protonated (thats the H). The anion is thus the chloride ion. This is done by treating the compound with hydrocloric acid.
When you are freebasing, you are just doing the reverse process. Deprotonating the basic group and giving the parent molecule (called free base because the molecule is a base when it is in its normal form). You are not changing the polarity of the molecule! You are just creating a charge on the molecule, which makes it water solubable. Changing the polarity, would involve changing the actual molecule.
You probably did freebase the ephedrine, BUT you probably did not do a clean reaction, and this is the same risk you take when you freebase anything.
Go to the library and find a book on organic chemistry. Read teh chapter on amines, that should answer all yer questions.

That makes sense, looks like I need to study a bit more organic chemistry...Learn something new everyday... Although the other things about ephedrine freebase being useless does stand true I believe.

Just out of curiousity than chemist because this got me to thinking. methamphetamine is a non-polar substance. Adding the HCL makes it soluable in water. But then does this change its soluability in non-polar solvents? Or would adding the hcl allow it to be soluable in polar and non-polar solvents?

Okay i just typed a huge explaniation, and then lost my post, so here we go again...
Meth is actually slightly polar, but not very. This is because the Nitrogen is electronegative. But the rest of the molecule is non-polar. This means that meth is probably most soluable in slightly polar solvents. But anyways...
Meth HCl is water soluable because you are just protonating the nitrogen atom. This creates a full positive charge on the nitrogen and a negative charge on the chloride ion. These charges allow the water to surround the charges and dissolve the compound
You can think of this as kinda like --
table salt - NaCl=Na+Cl- meth - (MethH)Cl=MethH+Cl-
The full charges will "override" the non-polar side of the molecule.
For a salt to be water soluable, its parent molecule must have very very large non-polar character. MethCl is just too small of a molecule to be organic soluable
So-
Meth - organic soluable
MethHCl-water soluable

First, it's not always possible to break the HCl bond using baking soda - you can with some substances, but not all... as for ephedrine, as others said, unless you have PURE ephedrine you're SOL - don't even think about trying to base a mini-thin...
Secondly, um, shit, why the fuck would you even want to freebase ephedrine and smoke it? It lacks that extra hydrogren to be any fun...
Which brings me to the last point, others have said this too, but no one seems to listen.. THE FREEBASE FORM OF METHAMPHETAMINE IS A NASTY OIL, YOU CAN'T SMOKE IT, YOU CAN'T EAT IT, YOU CAN'T BANG IT - YOU MUST GAS YOUR FREEBASE TO SALT OUT THE GOODS BEFORE YOU HAVE ANYTHING!! (the CAPS indicate I am yelling!)...
