Charles Hampton jumped off a bridge,
couldn’t take it anymore,
Crawling through paperwork like a midge,
Laboring away in his office oh so tall,
Couldn’t figure out why the people below should seem so small,
They seemed so much the same and when he realized they were,
Hit him like a brick,
Started to make him feel just a little sick,
He was at the top and he didn’t know how he got there,
Didn’t like it anymore,
Fancy suits and leather shoes, business meetings and slicked down hair,
Just wanted to escape,
All the swindling and the rape,
Going insane trying to tax his brain,
To buy a bottle of champagne,
Didn’t suit him anymore,
Just wanted to walk on out the door,
When he got to the ground floor he realized,
In time there would be another job, money and demise,
Went to see if he could fit into his fridge,
When he couldn’t Charles Hampton jumped off a bridge.

ThankYouThankYou. I have been wrestiling with similar emotions lately (not that Im about to jump off a bridge mind you) but the feeling of this "office" life we create that is just plain phony. Always appreciate your work, I like the way the tone comes forward as matter-of-fact, don't know if it was intentional or not, but it works nicely with the theme.

The pace of this is incredible, I'm feeling such empathy with the character and of course we can all relate it to our own lives in some way. Very telling. The ending, the power of the last three lines blew me away.

Reminds me for some reason of Thomas Berger's writing, and the character of Carlo Reinhart in particular? Amazing.

Thanks guys. Didnt know this one was so great. I think I wanna add another segment to it about another guy, or write a similar one to it about another guy. There is this big bridge across the freeway near my house and everytime I walk over it I feel like I jsut wanna jump off it because i can, one of those crazy urges you know. When I had jumping off bridges on my mind I made this poem.
