Do you give to charity?

How?

I give monthly (automatic on a credit card) to public radio and one other organization, Women for Women International which helps women in countries destroyed by war set up businesses, become literate if they aren't, etc. I give once yearly to MAPS, ACLU, Greenpeace, Environmental Defense Fund, Earthjustice and two animal rescues (African Wildlife Fund and an Orangutan Rescue in Borneo). You have to be careful with animal rescues in particular because often they are poorly managed and you might be throwing your money away without helping anything. Locally I donate art and my time for many causes.

Time donation is as important as money. I just went to a house concert that a couple of my musician friends did to raise money for the local Land Trust (buys land to keep it undeveloped) and at $25 per ticket they raised over $35, 000 because so many people gave more than the cost of the ticket. It's something a lot of people don't think about but using your particular talents or skills as a way of giving, especially locally, is a great way to make a difference.

I don't trust charities..

In the UK the company can legally keep 80% of donations then things like this happen:

I give to people personally.. buy big issues etc..

I personally do diff things during diff times of year

With colder weather now, I go around my neighbor gathering old blankets and warm clothing, then take it to the designated homeless camp grounds. I also take a lot of teenage stuff to our local station for homeless and at risk kids. There r a handful of usual panhandlers at the market down the street. Every year for the last 7 yrs, I buy a pizza and a case of water. Take it to those guys with a cpl packs of smokes.. They r super nice and grateful.

Spring/summer time. I do donation only mini photography shoots. Minus a small portion that go to buying the CDs for those who get the pics done, the rest of the money goes to whatever school is near, where the shoot is taking place. It gets put towards low Income and/or making kids account current plus some for lunches.

I teach my girls to always get left overs when we go out to eat, even if it wasn't serving they likes, cuz we will prolly see someone on the road hungry. I also keep sandwich bags in my car of pet food and give those to ppl with them on the corner..

I know is not much, but makes me feel like I'm doing my part in my town
