I've been prescribed Stilnox for my insomnia, I tried it once (no alcohol involved) and I woke up and saw I had sent a bunch of gibberish text messages which I cannot recall sending. The last thing I remember was hallucinating.

I'm not keen on having anymore so I'm planning on going back to the doctor to see if I can get a different type of medication, any idea of what he will prescribe? Will I have these sort of side effects with all sleeping medication?

if he steers clear of the benzo route, you could also try zopiclone which is another Z sleeping drug.
it tends to ease you into sleep a bit better rather than attempt to knock you out and also has a longer half life.
if you take stilnox and dont attempt to sleep strait away, you will have the experience you described.

i've often woken to find a whole sheet had been taken in the middle of the night when i only took one, i think partly due to the half life being so short and my shitting sleeping pattern.

No you shouldn't have these problems with other sedatives. Stilnox has a bad history of causing these odd effects and I remember when my doctor changed my script years ago because Stilnox had been temporary withdrawn from the shelves due to an odd suicide case which involved Stilnox intoxication.

You will probably be put on a benzo, Temazepam is very common in Aus and the first drug many doctors will prescribe for short term insomnia. It depends a bit on your type of insomnia which drug will be prescribed though.

I think the most liekly med you will be put on is temazepam as oxycondone suggested, however all anyone can really do is speculate.

Imovane/zopiclone is the other 'Z-Drug' prescribed in Australia and seems to be less prone to making people act funky. I suppose you could get this, personally I find it more effective than benzo's for hypnotic purposes (as I do with stilnox/zolpidem) but it does leave an odd taste in my mouth.

That disgusting taste last well into the next day, making your food taste different ime
