I am currently prescribed 200mg mscontin per day and 15mg roxicodone x4 a day. The morphine does not help me at all. but the doctor does not want to switch me to oxycontin due to its bad rep. But the morphine honestly isnt doing a thing, the onlly relief i get is when i take the roxicodone every 6 hours. How many more things is he going to want to try before he finally trys oxycontin? Ive even been on the fentanyl patch. he put me on that before the morphine. weird. but is there anything i can do to persuade him to switch me to something i know will work? I do not plan to abuse it i just want relief. But im only 23 i messed up my back in a car accident and have been in pain management since. How can i get him to switch? I told him its not working, he just keeps raising the morphine and raising my tolerance. Any advice on what i should do besides find a new doc, i really like this one

It depends.

You don't have any hydromorphone ER medications there, there's only oxymorphone in Opana but they're much stronger than morphine. Orally oxymorphone is 2.66 to 3.33x morphine. And oxycodone orally is ~2.5x morphine orally as well. So maybe Opana ER is the solution, it's known that it's hard to be prepared for i.v. injection. Anyway, I don't know why OxyContin has bad reputation, the new formula makes making solutions for i.v. from those tablets is impossible.

But I don't know customs in the U.S. concerning prescribing opioids. Here OxyContin (Norpharma/Mundipharma) have entered the market not long ago. Hydromorphone and oxymorphone are absent. Norpharma/Mundipharma also released DHC Continus again, a few years ago dihydrocodeine totally vanished from the market as DHC Continus was the only medication containing DHC and they stopped producing it for Polish market. Even codeine-only preparation is gone now.

THey seem to be taking everything away over there. There is a new preparation of hydromorphone ER here in the states, its called exalgo. but i dont think its widely prescribed yet and im sure it would be very expensive. Morphine just doesnt work well in my system, the only relief i get is when i take my breakthrough meds. my doc cant get it through his head that morphine just doesnt work well in me. hes probably gonna max out my dose on morphine before he even things of switching me to oxycontin. My body responds so well to oxycodone, so I could probably be alright on 40mg or 60mg ocycontin twice a day rather than 200mg of morphine. I would like to try the hydromorphone er exalgo but i would not be able to afford it and my doctor probably would not prescribe it to me. Thank you very much for your input

morphine really does suck in the pill form. its nothing like getting a shot of it at the hospital. i have tried it many times it does absolutly nothing. also my mother in law who has cancer and no opiate tolerance is pres morphine and it does nothing for her pain either. opana really r very awesome. i would go in and tell him once again the morphine is doing nothing and u have been doing some research and u would really like to try the opana they r awesome and in my opinio 100 times better than oc's. tell him u will b happy to come in for a pill count at any time that u just want some releif. u donnt sound to me like u r abusinng your meds at all u seem like u just want some releif best of luck to u

thank you for your well thought out response. I have tried opana er in the past 40mg version. It didnt work too well in me, however, after my car accident I was given oxycontin 40mg, and it worked so well for me that i barely needed my breakthrough medication. Im just worried that taking 100mg of morphine twice a day is going to boost my tolerance and make things more difficult for me down the road, but he seems to want to use anything related to "oxy" as a last resort. I have another appointment with him on december 23. Im hoping he will finally switch me. because the only time i get any relief is when i take my breakthrough med (roxicodone 15mg) and i can only take one every six hours, it starts to kill me after four. I know I have a physical dependency on these drugs but I do not think I am an addict. I just wish oxycontin didnt have such a bad rep in my docs eyes so that he would give it to me, it would take a much lower dose than the morphine and I most likely wouldnt need my breakthrough meds as much which is my goal. I dont want to have to resort to breakthrough meds every 4 to 6 hours. again thank you for you post.

Your doctor in his mind is looking out for you because you are so young. They try not to prescribe oxy's to young people unless its really needed to the extreme. It surprises me tho that he prescribes you roxi's for breakthrough pain because what you want are oxycodones just like your roxi's. I have never had morphine & always wondered what it was like but reading all the threads on this site, it boggles my mind how alot of people dont get much relief from it. Only the drip of liquid morphine is worth doing from I was told from several people I know that were in the hospital.

As far as getting what you want, you're just gonna have to keep telling him the same thing until it clicks in his head, it takes some persuading but im 80% sure it has to do with your age & being so young & he doesnt want you hooked. From what im told, the new formulation OP's are not as strong as the old OC formulation.

Good luck in your endeavours in getting what your looking for, & that is pain relief because no one should live with pain.

I believe it is because of my age too. And morphine pills are aweful. even the instant release ones in my opinion. I couldnt feel the MSIR at all. and I can barely tell that the mscontin is there. the only good form is what you have heard, drips at the hospital. Its all about the bio availability. I havent heard much about the new OPs i just heard theyre hard to abuse, I didnt know they wouldnt be as effective.
