I went to my doctor two weeks ago thinking I could get some stims but ended up getting a Rx for Celexa !! At first it was all cool, he even aked me at one point if I thought it was ADHD or depression but I just said I didn't think it was depression. He told me it was weird to get symptoms for ADHD this late (I'm 19). My doctor thinks I'm a good person (not to say I'm not)and that I don't abuse drugs....So does anyone know of anything I could say to still try and get a Rx for dexadrine ???? The main problem I said I was having was concentration, and he said Celexa would help with this.

I'm not trying to turn this into a dexedrine v. adderall thread but why wouldn't a doctor want to prescribe dex to a 19 year old but might would prescribe adderall? Do doctors really think there is that much of a difference between the two? I'm 19 BTW so I was just curious.

Your right Phreex I do think Celexa actually is helping me. I've been in such a positive mood these last couple of days and even started talking with a lot of people I've been trying to avoid. I want to stay on Celexa......but I'm still wondering if it's possible to ALSO get a Rx for a Stim ??

Your doctor is correct, it's not normal to get ADD symptoms so late in life. It might be too late to change your story now, but what you have to do describe a history of symptoms having bothered you long into the past. Get your parents in on it too (i mean, not the drug scamming, but get them to agree that you've always exhibited symptoms). If you can produce old report cards or something, all the better.

Celexa and feeling good. I presume you have only been on the celexa for a very short time (like a week or less). Unfortunatly the true effects of SSRIs usually aren't visible over this period (often 2 weeks is necessery to get the actual effects). However some SSRIs (including prozac) often have minor stimulant style effects during the first couple weeks (possible due to week norephinepherine and other nuertransmitter reuptake inhibition) these symptoms often disappear.
So what I am saying is that this benifit you are getting from celexa is very likely to be placebo and if not you shouldn't count on it staying around. Of course there is no reason not to keep taking it if you think it might even help you. Doctors are generally VERY lenient with SSRIs so there is no reason to think they would take it away...and asking for both SSRI and a stim isn't going to raise any more sucpiscion (perhaps less) as no one abuses SSRIs.

xylo's right. it didnt just pop up, its always been there, you just thought you were stupid and had a short attention span. or so you say.
i'm scared of the new bluelight.

Well, I've been on Celexa for three weeks now. I started to notice its effects about the 2nd week. I have another appointment in three weeks. So I think it might be to late to get anything else. I did try to tell him that I've always had problems concentrating but the work was so easy it didn't matter and now that I'm in University I just can't keep up anymore. He just told me that its very rare for someone with ADHD to breeze through school. I quess I'll probably have to stick to Meth. Which sucks for me because I don't really have a hook up. Looks like I'm gonna have to continue drinking XL coffees or I could even try to use my chemistry backroung to my advantage !!!!! (he he just joking, I would NEVER do that)

This is why I WOULDN'T make TAOS 2 public..
if you're at 3 weeks then it's prime time to try and hit him up for more... too late? huh? It takes 2 weeks before the medicine can even be considered 'effective' so if you have been on it for 3 weeks you should be experiencing it's full effects - now is the time to hit up your doctor..

Yah I guess your right PhreeX. I'll just act really disappointed that I'm not able to concentrate any better but I still would like to stay on Celexa. I'm worried he'll just put me on a stronger SSRI or another anti-d.

If he says no, get a second opinion. Go to phychiatrist and tell them your story theres alot of liturature about adult add. They should give you adderall or ritalin.

Should I just ask him directly if taking ritalin or dexadrine might help me ?? This seems to drug seeking to me. The last time I saw him I said I drank a lot of coffee and that sorta helped but not much. Was that the wrong thing to say ? I pretty much spelt it out for him the symptoms of ADHD (did my homework) and he keeps thinking I'm depressed. I think it was because I told him I had mood swings. Oh well... I don't know if I want Stims that bad to now have to go lie to a Phycatrist. They cost money don't they ???? I bet you he'd want to talk to my parents and the lies would keep going on and on.....

Well, typically if you are trying to get a prescription for something you don't really have, most of the time you will end up lying to somebody. You seem to think that you should be able to walk into a doc's office and just say "Hey doc, life sucks, couldya write a script for adderall or something to make me happy?" and he would do just that.
If you are going to convince him that you have adhd, you need to convince your parents as well (they're probably paying for it, too). Hell, you even need to convince yourself that you have adhd. And if nothing is working, like someone else said, get a second opinion.

You can tell him you think you might have limbic ADD which is known to cause depression, moodiness, etc. You'd have to read up on it to know what you are talking about. Like other people have said, it isn't going to be as easy as walking in there and walking out 20 minutes later with a script for desoxyn.
You are also going to have to cooperate with whatever diagnosis your psych is giving you. Don't get defensive if he/she thinks you are depressed, take the SSRI you get and complain that it isn't working a couple weeks later. There is always second opinions if you can't convince this psych.

You really gotta just go along with the doctor within reason.. see, it's difficult to explain, because sometimes you gotta just smile and say "Ok, I hope this works" and other times you gotta get a little defensive and convey your feelings that you disagree with his disgnosis..
I wouldn't go in and start throwing around drug names, especially drugs like Adderall or Dexedrine - how would you know? That is, how does a patient know? Yeah, some people will ask for Valium if they can't sleep, but it's well-known that Valium = sleep.. but when it comes to ADHD, most people only know "Ritalin" .. it's VERY IMPORTANT to not sound like you have been studying the PDR or that you use these drugs for recreation... you CAN bring it up ifyou say something like "when I was in 10th grade the school had me see a psychitrist, he had suggested a medication to help me focus, I believe he said Ritalin or Adderall".. or if this is a doctor you have not seen before, you can flat out say "Oh, from the time I was in 6th grade until I was in 11th grade I took 20mg of Adderall, this really helped, and when I stopped taking them I definitly noticed that it was harder to concentrate" .. if asked why you stopped, say you're insurance dropped because your mom got a differn't job .. if you're 18 they shouldn't ask to speak with your parents..
Remember, you are the patient, and it's one thing to give your input, but you shouldn't know about all the differn't drugs available...
You can always seek a second opinion, or you can just go through a few of his BS scripts then get a little more assertive..
Again, it's a true ART to script drugs from doctors, which is hard to convey via a text medium..

PhreeX is right about scripting being an art. You just can't explain it step by step to someone else. It's like those annoying bastards that always hook up with the hottest girl at a club/party. They don't carry an instruction manual around with them, they just know some basic stuff, know what to say, and have a lot of experience. And even then, you aren't guaranteed to get what you want.

Should I say something like this "My mood has definately been better these last couple of days and I'm much more positive about my life in general...it's just that I still haven't noticed any changes in my ability to concentrate...my eyes are still darting around the page when I try to study and I'm still finding my self get distracted by meaningless things.I was looking for information on the internet and came about this site on ADHD and it was like really weird....it was like reading my life....I don't know.....maybe I should be on Ritalin....."

PERFECT! Go with it, as thats something I would say.. don't start flinging drug names out like you're a pharmacy, but that should help you.. still, be willing to take another drug and give it a few weeks.. eventually you will come to a point where he will give you SOME amphetamine, or else he will just keep fucking the the dose on some SSRI, or he will give you drug after drug thats not an amphetamine - at that point, you can get a little more agressive, express your discomfort and frustration, and ask if you can try Ritalin because you have seen in mentioned countless times in regards to ADHD - which is what youthink you have... or you can tell about your "friend" that has the same symptoms you do and has been taking Adderall, which "makes him seem like a totally differn't person" ..
For now, go with the bit you just typed, thats good..
