Hi all!

I've been prescribed 20mg Celexa two weeks ago for depression and anxiety. I know the right thing for me would be to stay off other drugs for a while. On the other hand, I'm not a big drug user and like to party maybe once a month. Now I'm kind of depressed of not being able to party anymore...

So what can I take that won't interact too much with the Celexa? I know MDMA is a big NO NO. I'm pretty sure amphetamines are not recommended. I tried alcohol and it was ok. What about GHB? And coke? That's pretty much what I have access to...

I took Celexa, only 10mg though, for about two years and there are several things you can't really mix with it. Did not use mdma/any chemicals that play with serotonin during that time, and it was really difficult to drink. I got sick off maybe 3-4 drinks when I could previously have more than double that, and the hangovers were much much worse. The benzos (xanax, klonopin, etc) interact nicely but they are nastily addictive I'm just now learning and if you are already anxious you may like the relief from them too much, but for the sake of the question there's no poor interactions. The doctor told me to avoid DXM at all costs, and from reading around I know that can cause serotonin syndrome as well. Coke was much less effective and I felt next to nothing from it, I wouldn't bother...dextroamphetamine seemed effective, however. LSD seemed to interact very poorly with lots of anxiety and paranoia. Cannabis is more than fine, you are seemingly less sensitive to it at first and don't feel it as much but that goes away eventually.

This is all in my experience and in my opinion so, YMMV with some of these.

Thanks for sharing. That's funny, I can drink like 10 beers on 20mg Celexa and be fine. I have some benzos that I only use while smoking weed because it interacts very nicely. But it won't put me in a good mood for partying. And when I say partying, I mean fucking two girls at once partying. That's why I'm interested in GHB...

FAQ: Antidepressants and Recreational Drugs

Find the section on SSRI interactions and read up.

MDMA won't work, and psychedelics will be blunted. DXM can cause serotonin syndrome when mixed with SSRIs.

Amphetamines will still work, they seem to lose a little part of the feeling but I found that I was fine mixing amphetamines and sertraline.

You may be somewhat more sensitive to GHB.

As you said, it's best whilst being treated for depression to lay off substances and let your mind clear so you can really work on recovering. Just taking the medication won't fix you in my opinion; it will remove the deep lows but also blunt your emotions. You need to use this time to consider what you can change in your life to heal, and work on reaching those goals.

I didn't fully recover from my long period of depression and anxiety until I took a long break from drugs and really worked at getting my life back on track.
