In many ways, vinyl is one of the singular links to the 'soul' of the medium. Just as more 'traditional' musicians proffes a certain liking for acoustic instruments rather than their electric counterparts, so too do some DJ's like the visceral link that the turntable gives to the music. Vinyl is timeless, raw grooves in a medium that remains independant of technological formats and innovation. When NASA sent information on the pioneer space probe, it was contained on a simple gold engraved platter you could read with a needle. Technology is great, but only transient... Vynil will continue to be a mainstay of the music scene long after the DAT tape, the CD, and the mp3.
Also, since the sampling rate on vinyl has no absolute cutoff like digital mediums, it offers a greater range of bass without becoming distorted at high volumes. Pump up digital with a shit amp and you get the peak frequencies just 'chopped off.'
A complete revolution is a circle, we will forever hark back to vinyl. Not to say technology will continue to innovate and make music tools heaps better! Just the old ways will always have a place. Its just the vibe, man...

Sorry Dan, you said digital will never sound as good as analog? well umm..
seeing that pretty much ALL the music that is released today is digitised in some form, I find it hard to accept that comment hehehe :P
Example -> all electronic music will be digitised at some point during its recording, proably many times..
so how can something that is digital to start with not sound as good when it is digital?
And by the way, apart from teh hiss and pops and crackle and lack of top end and lack of sub bass how the fuck would you tell the difference between the two or say that vinyl sounds better...

Also, since the sampling rate on vinyl has no absolute cutoff like digital mediums, it offers a greater range of bass without becoming distorted at high volumes. Pump up digital with a shit amp and you get the peak frequencies just 'chopped off.'
Sorry Thoth, but you're wrong. Digital recording has a frequency of 20kH - 20 000kH (or was that 40 000kH?) It cuts off the sounds we cant hear because it takes up too much memory. So its not as if vinyl offers better bass or anything like that, because its RECORDED digitally, simply put on acetate. So your theory doesnt work.
As for the amp theory, pump up ANY music on a shit amp and it will cut out and feedback. Thats just a matter of power through an amp. Doesnt matter if its digital or analog.
This is all a funny because you guys seem to think vinyl offers some form of magical sound that CD's cant offer, but its not the vinyl, its the way its recorded.
Older music, such as old rock and stuff that were recorded using analog machines do offer these so called "magical frequencies" that cant be heard, but felt. I agree to an extent, but with electronic music, where it starts of digital, gets recorded digitally, then simply pressed onto acetate, doesnt really offer anything apart from what we already know about turntables etc...
This is silly, vinyl vs digital...theres no such thing :-p

Sorry Horse I minced my terms
smile.gif

However, my point was that the frequency range of digital is absolute, while this is not so for analog mediums like magnetic tape.
If the sample sound is too loud, you do get frequency chopping. It sounds like a bitch and fucks speakers right up. It can manifest itself most apparently when you attempt to drive large speakers with an underpowered amp. Analog has a more flexible 'dynamic range' while digital is absolute. This means analog can often provide a better quality sound at high volumes over a wide frequency range such as heavy bass beats.

Horsey, you know your shit!
wink.gif

I think sound is all a matter of fashion. Somethings people like, somethings people don't like. Whether its digital or analog, whatever we are conditioned to listen to, whatever we have more fond associations with, this will be out preferred medium.
Just my $20.

Thoth: Umm i agree to an 'extent' with what you say about the dynamic range of digital media....yes if you overload a d/a converter like in a digital mixer or soundcard, it will distort much more than analog, because once you go over 0db or whatever the clipping threshold is the d/a might or might not think it's at the other end of the scale, and do all wierd shit to your nice analog signal. But when you're mastering a track to goto vinyl, it's not a case of just throwing it on. For starters, the frequency response of a vinyl is shit, i don't know exact figures but they don't go very high, and the bass has to be cut below a certain frequency (i think 50hZ? i'im not sure) otherwise the stylus will not track it properly...
But in regards to digital recorded music clipping differently than analog recorded music, well umm bullshit? When it comes out of the cd player its analog. Yes it was sampled on the cd at 44khz, but the a/d's reconstruct it...how would the amp tell the difference?

umm a few things. GOOD vinyl, (i'm talking big labels ep's here, i don't know about elec. eps' etc) is ussually pressed with the lowest freq. at somewhere between 7-12hz. saying that a stylus doesn't pick up below 50hz is a massive generalisation, and i would say one that only applies to very crap dj ones. i know for a fact that my table, when operating independant of any speaker interference (ie. not sitting on a table which is next to a speaker, pref. in another room), dead level, with everything clean, can pickup somewhere around 8-10Hz. As far as i'm concerned, this is where that magical quality of vinyl is often generated.
To save this thread going round in circles, i won't go on, but in my opinion, records CAN sound superior to cd's, but this will never happen in a club (due to both the records used and the tables). CD's and records are both a valuable tool for a dj, and there isn't much use comparing the two, cos they are both used in different ways, and in the case of cdj's, are still being experimented with. in the case of availability of the two, once again, not much use comparing, the real electronic labels aren't gunna put all their releases on cd, but then again some well made music will never make it to vinyl, so cd is the only option.
i don't think its an argument between the two, rather its a positive view on what will soon be happening in electronic music, changing the way we hear it when we're out, and hopefully giving us all a better experience...
------------------
...got a place for watching that will paint pictures and colour lights...
------------------

I never said they can't pick up below 50hz, i said when a record is mastered a certain part of the low frequency spectrum is cut out and the natural roll off due to the mechanical nature of the way vinyl works limits top end to something less than cd...
but anyway, fuck it. vinyl purists need to get over the cd thing, and cd purists need to buy 12'ies. Full stop
=)

Put it this way:
  • The music I play is ONLY available on Vinyl.
  • I learnt how to mix using turntables.
  • Every club I have played at is hooked up with turntables.
  • I like to be able to "see" my music, so I know when a breakdown/build is coming. This isn't possible on a CD (unless you have laser vision)
    smile.gif
So it really comes down to what you play, how you play it, and how much money you have

Chow...

hey
just a bit of info from what i remembered from my signal processing unit at uni (which isnt much cos i failed miserably
smile.gif
)
human ears can hear from approximately 20hz to 20khz. cds can produce from 20hz-22khz. to be able to convert from a/d and back again, the sampling rate needs to be double the maximum recorded frequency, which is why cds are sampled at 44khz, resulting in no quality loss.
still this is only theoretical, and i have no idea how accurately it applies to a real life situation. plus sounds below 20hz can not be heard, but they can still be felt.. *rumble* hehe

Dan has it bang on.
Barely any of the music I buy on vinyl is available on CD.
Plus the tactile nature of mixing with vinyl is well... FUN.
Also being able to see where you are in a tune is invaluable, where the break downs are etc.
my name is raw
I am addicted to vinyl

Good point Dan, i mean all i'm trying to say is that vinyl doesn't have any pro's apart from what u just noted:
a) music available much earlier than on cd, if it is available on cd.
b) cd's aren't really accepted in the dj industry...
c) it is more fun to mix on vinyl. and easier i believe, as you can touch the record without having to go thru a cd player or something....a lot easier to adapt to a different turnie than a different cd player...
Ummm and yes the ear can hear down to 20Hz and u can feel below this but what kind of sub has a response like that? I'm talking about ur everyday club/rave type sub....most go down to around 30HZ...
