cats' reactions to drugs (aside from pot!)

I don't think cats of any sort seek out altered states with any regularity. It simply isn't a good idea when you have to hunt to survive.

That said, Kava Kava is an herbal she'd likely enjoy.

There are reports of jaguars actually chewing vines containing harmala alkaloids on purpose (not sure of their validity though)

These pills were in my cabinet. Well, aside from the gabapentin.

We kept her dog treats in the medicine cabinet, but she figured out how to get up there (I used to think it was cute when she'd jump up on the toilet, seat down of course- not anymore) and she figured out how to go from there, to the counter, and knock open the cabinet. She made one hell of a mess in there.

^ :) :)

allowing a cat to dose itself seems bad too, cats apparently are attracted to the common houseplant dumbcane, (Dieffenbachia species) chewing it and poisoning themselves in the process.

^ Yeah, they like to eat the plants you have in the room in general (only to throw up moments later).

Doesn't that help digestion / gi tract for the cat though? When my cat gets sick I always get him some grass to eat (actually I do it regularly even when he's not sick, at least twice a week I bring him in some grass to eat. He's a housecat because he can't get vaccinated, but I do bring him out sometimes while watching him, and outside all he cares about is... eating grass!)

grass, yes

plants, no

if one has cats or any pets that can access house plants they need to confirm the plants are not poisonous to their pets as quite a few can be

i once shot SC codeine phosphate to my cat, she fell from somewhere and broke his leg. i'm not sure about this but some say cats have trouble with metabolizing opiates, - i think thats why they use xylazine, ketamine or tiletamine for cats. my cat started puking some time later after the sc codeine and slept all day. its been very long time i cant remember the details right now sorry

Yeah...I'm no vet but don't try this monkeying around with pets business. It's dangerous. Household pets have different nutritional requirements than we do, and they also have different xenobiotic metabolic processes. I remember i used to have a cat that would compulsively search out photographs to lick them. I'm pretty sure it couldn't have been good for him. If you care about animals don't fuck around with them without reason.

I know I wouldn't go shooting codeine to my cat, especially knowing that cats have different enzymes and might have difficulties metabolizing opiates.. I just love my cat too much!

My cat doesn't even like the smell of valerian root (I have those sleeping aid pills with valerian and melatonin), but she's really into weed though. For some reason, cats and cannabis seems to be a wonderful combination!

your cat isn't attracted to that valerian? Is it a weak dose in the pills or something? I thought the valerian reaction was about as universal as catnip!

That got a good laugh from me & mrs f&b

Mine sometimes give me that look if they get biscuits that they find less than appetizing - followed by trailing me around the house, whinging incessantly =D

The opposite was when they got Kit & Kaboodle - I'm sure Purina used to put some sort of kitty crack in there bacause my furballs would go crazy for those biscuits

I want to say it's like 1/4 cats who will have *zero* response to catnip, and the rest will respond pretty similarly.(edit, according to wiki 2/3 of cats willl respond and this is a hereditary thing too)

There's 200mg of valerian per pill, I don't know how strong/weak of a dose it is, but it smells of valerian like hell and my cat acts as if it was a lemon if I put the open bottle or a single pill under her nose (ie makes a face and quickly pulls away).

Oh you can't go too strong! I've let my cat put his nose right on my bottle of pure valerian capsules, and he ran from it too lol! I shake the bottle though (and I take tons of vitamins / fish oil / etc, he knows the sound of the valerian bottle!), and he comes running, I open it and waft some scent towards him, or just wave the bottle past his face for a second. He typically will just lay right there with me and roll to his back looking to get scratched on teh stomach, and after maybe 10-15 minutes doesn't seem affected any more.

^ Well my cat acts the same way if I show her a single pill as well, I guess it must be the first impression that scared her away from it. :)

Me neither, that looks sad actually. It's fake though, this cat ain't actually tripping.
