Cats on Xanax?

Xanax is commonly used in veterinary medicine and the doses aren't THAT much smaller than with humans; for example, my 20kg dog was prescribed 10-20mg diazepam per day for muscle relaxation and anxiety. Dogs will also take 0.5-1mg Xanax for things like being scared of fireworks on New Year's Eve (and the 4th of July, if you're in the US). Now, we have no idea of how much the OP's friend knew on the subject and it is irresponsible to give without consulting a vet, but self-medicating with appropriate doses is generally alright in my opinion, if you know what you're doing.

If the doses were appropriate I don't see massive problems with it, although consulting a vet is stilll a much better idea. The fact that the cat is nursing is also a problem, and the percieved anxiety probably had lots to do with having given birth. But all this talk about "no way should you give your pet Xanax" is a bit rubbish; it isn't that black/white.

Unless she measured out 0.1mg of alprazolam for the cat she was being pretty irresponsible. Though i think loads of people are over-reacting. If i were the cat i'd thank the lady.
