Cats on Xanax?

i didn't take the time to read all of the previous replies but-

that cat and its kittens should be taken away from your friend. not only could she have killed the cat, but now the cat will be breastfeeding her new kittens with drugs in her system which could potentially kill her newborns.

it's stupid fucking people like this that deserve to be killed. goddamnit.

not to mention that cats specifically are EXTREMELY sensitive to medications even those made for their own species. medication dosing for adult cats is usually only a fraction of what you would give a puppy.

i'm so sick of seeing posts like this. people who don't know how to properly take of or handle their pets SHOULD NOT have them in the first place. this was extremely irresponsible. if your friend or her mother can't handle some meowing then they shouldn't have the cat at all. if they can't handle the one cat, why the fuck are they irresponsibly breeding it? this is the reason shelters are so overly populated and so many animals are euthanized on a daily basis. not to mention all of the strays who are left to die in the wild because people (said to be the most intelligent species) are so fucking ignorant and careless about the lives of other innocent creatures.

^^^not worth abusing, in other words

I bet that the amount of phenobarbital in those things is very very small and I don't even know what sodium bromure is but it sounds nasty.

I don't have the box but yeah, you would have to swallow the entire box (which is very expensive) to have a semi-decent effect.
For the phenobarb I don't remember the dose, and it's sodium bromide I think in English.

yea i would think the same rule applies to humans and animals here: it is recommended to not take benzos while pregnant or nursing

as for dosing a cat or dog who is hysterical, i believe 2.5mg-5mg diazepam are typical doses (depending on the breed and weight of said cat/dog). if animal control or vetrinary services are available, they are usually preferable

peace

^(to Violenza666) Yeah, OTC. The recommended dose is two to three pills a day. But as I said, it's very expensive (like 9 euros for a box of 30 pills), which makes sense 'cause it's OTC.

I don't think you'll find a lot of cat or dog owners who give the whole box to their pet, although it's still possible, but I'd say the price is deterrent for this kind of "practice".

My cat gets seperation anxiety when we go on vacation, so I was considering this when we go out of town for a week in july. The cat goes literally insane and meows nonstop and is totally destructive... she stays at my parents house but perhaps something like this could help. It's not something I would give the cat all the time. haha I don't know if it's OTC in the states though.

I would worry about those little kittens who are now drinking xanax milk out the mothers teats. sounds quite ignorant and irresponsible to me. Hope they are alright

and put down?

you realize we are talking about cats, right? fucking cats, man.

Fuck that dude, I'd rather see some shit brained twat get hit by a car by another shit brain trying to text their bff while going 60, then see an entire litter of kittens compromised because some cunt is to insincere to let a pregnant cat do what she is supposed to do after giving birth.

In contrast to a creature as pure as a cat humans are a plague. AND I ACTUALLY LIKE PEOPLE!

^come on. where is your species loyalty? if the size difference was the other way around, that mother would use you to teach her young to hunt. if she didn't have any young, she would just play with your half-dead body until she got bored and decided to chew your head off. then she might eat you, or she might just move on to something more entertaining.

it's stupid fucking people like this that deserve to be killed.
then...
regardless of what animal/creature we are discussing, it's still a fucking life.
^Holy shit, Manson?

Also, the cat was the one who ate the drug and put all her kittens at risk. I say we throat punch the feline mother.

^i can't believe we've been saying "throat punch" this whole time when there is something equally effective that also rhymes. though i do not know if the words "cunt," "fag," or "nigger" have any good place outside of porn and educational programming.

I can't be bothered to sort through all the throat/cunt punching, so someone may have mentioned this already....

If anyone has a cat that's stressed/anxious, try Bach flower essences. They're completely safe, and IIRC often recommended for pregnancy. There's also Feliway, but it can take much longer to work. My vet instructor suggested Feliway, but I've seen more consistent results with the flower essences, and it's what I'll be giving my cat when I go on vacation.

I have also seen melatonin recommended but don't really know much about it.

^I wouldn't mess with the melatonin, simply due to personal experience using it on myself. It's given me some really odd, almost alarming side-effects: hypertension, palpitations, cold sweats, migraines...

The flower essence sounds interesting...

I would avoid anything that affects thyroid / hormones tho; like melatonin or DHEA

Well, see, there ya go. The correct dose rate of alprazolam for cats is approximately 0.15mg to 0.2mg, depending on the weight of the cat, assuming that most cats are around 11lb (5kg), which works out to be about 0.01mg/lb (0.03mg/kg).

So even if your friend's mum only gave the cat 0.5mg, that is WAY TOO MUCH. Literally 2 to 4 times the correct dosage.

This is precisely why people should NOT give their pets any medications without them being specifically prescribed to that animal.

I understand. Unless it's a drug that is specifically administered for animals like ketamine. This is why you should never let a person who abuses xanax, give a suggestion on how many mg should be administered on an animal. Too bad I didn't find out until after it happened. Thanks for the replies though, except for the throat punching. Mature.

You really experienced those side effects with melatonin? I have used melatonin countless times and it just puts me straight to sleep in about an hour with no side effects. Interesting.
