When I was young(er), and essentially drug free, my biggest 'hero' was Carl Sagan. His eloquence and appreciation for the beauty in science was something I'd always been looking for in a public figure. After I started smoking marijuana, I found out he did for most of his life, and whats more, (after the writing of that essay) he used LSD.

He wrote an essay on marijuana and it's uses, and to this day I think it's a great thing for any prospective smoker to read, and even experienced smokers. Although I've never met anyone who hallucinates that frequently on marijuana :P

Anyway, good read. I figure a lot of you are probably familiar with it but to those that aren't, it's a good read.

For those of you who don't know who Carl Sagan is, he is (was) a scientist of a fair amount of renown. He had a TV show, wrote several books, and briefed the astronauts who landed on the moon. He and his wife also provided the plaque on the voyager spacecraft that has a message for anyone who might find it while it drifts endlessly through the cosmos. Definitely an interesting fellow, and one with an enlightened and educated view on substances that I hope becomes more popular.

Carl Sagan was a teenage hero of mine as well. I still love him, but haven't looked at any of his work lately. I have The Dragons of Eden on my bookshelf... maybe I should give it a read! ;)

Wow, I never knew about this. I guess it lends more credence to the whole genius/pot correlation ;)

I absolutely loved his novel, Contact.

Carl Sagan is a true badass indeed, a great role model.

It was really a good thing I found him. I grow frustrated with my friends. I'm a skeptical, scientific person but I'm also a crazy romantic. My friends think I'm crazy, but I think I'm just a scientist with an imagination, and marijuana in no way inhibits either of those things (A lot of my friends are sober, and think my marijuana use makes me less of scientist. I am starting to think I need new friends :p)

I hate when people say "OMG this guy is really smart but he also smokes marijuana!" There are millions of people in that category. I'm not accusing you of doing that its just that this thread reminds me of that sort of thing.

Yeah. I really rather intended more discussion of the essay, but then I rambled in the original post about who Sagan was and we ended up discussion him, mostly :P

I think is is funny that Carl Sagan was a paranoid stoner. I heard this from the mouth of Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a longtime friend and fellow pothead of Sagan. Lester, btw, was chill.
