I've tried searching for this, and I hope this doesn't violate any rules. My girlfriend's car was totalled tonight by a drunk driver driving 90 mph in residential streets. Her car spun and was wedged inbetween 2 poles.:( Thank God, she wasn't hurt badly at all... at least from what she can feel tonight... She mentioned her back and neck hurt pretty bad, so I told her to go to the ER tomorrow. Does anybody have advice on what words maybe to say to the doc, so he understands.. how much pain my girlfriend is in. Hope that made sense. Thanks in advance!

First.. I'm glad to hear nobody was killed or seriosuly injured.

Now... ask your friends and family for referrals for a good personal injury lawyer. If you have to, just call a bunch in the yellow pages and set up some consultations. You could be in for a BIG payday here! The lawyer can recommend doctors who specialize in treating accident victims.

ummm... I think he means what are the right words to be able to get some good scripts.

Sorry though, I have no idea what to say.

Tell her to say "I was hit by a drunk driver last night and was wedged between 2 poles and now my back and neck hurt tremendously, can you help me?" That should work.

I'm glad shes ok.

1 800 call sam

its fun to do even if your not in an accident ;)

other than pranking poor sam, your girl should easily be able to prank the docs

persistance should be enough with this kind of excuse, mysterious reacurring pains are realistic and scriptable :)

the only thing id worry about is her starting to worry about your <insert addiction here> because your coaching her on how to script

Thank goodness your gf is ok. She should definitly go see a doctor. It sounds like she may have whiplash, which is easily treated with pain medicine and possibly a little physical therapy. Best wishes to your girl and I hope she feels better soon.

Just b/c she doesn't hurt too bad the day of, doesn't mean that she won't be in some serious pain tommorrow. It's kinda like when you first start lifting weights. It doesn't hurt too bad the day of, but the next day, you are quite sore. I can almost guarantee that she will wake up in a world of hurt tommorrow. She may have some injuries that havn't shown up yet. At least she wasn't seriously injured, though. Maybe she should take in a copy of the police report when she goes to the ER. She would probably do better with her general physician, though...The ER will just give her enough meds to last until she can get in to see her regular doc (if she has one)

Holy shit, I thought my friends and I were the only ones who pranked Sam! Hahah We used to call that number all the time in high school. Thats funny shit.

dude, dont go to the er for something that happened days ago.

go to a family physician. i work in a hospital and the thing we hate worse is people coming to the emergency room for something thats not an emergency. it really says something about your personality when you go to the er for every medical problem.

about getting good meds, itll take more than "it hurts" to get some. youll need xrays, labwork, and a lookover for the doc to determine whats wrong with her. hell only prescribe something after he finds out whats wrong, not based on a complaint.

sorry if i sound like a dick, but something like that peeves the fuck out of me

Definately. She has a legitimate reason to get some pain relief. There is no need to try to scam the doc. Just be honest.... oh and sue the guy's ass off....

I too work in a hospital and your gf should have gone to the ER right after the accident. Telling the staff that it happened the other day is going to look weird even if you do have police reports and everything.

I would contact you PCP and have the doc's referral for some x-rays and other lab work. Granted, pain from back/neck injuries can take a few days to develop bit I think working with your doc is the best way to deal with this.

The old, "I can't sleep or work due to the pain." is usually a good one.

Ok, what am I missing? People are saying not to go to the ER "days after" when all the posts were the day of the accident and only the last couple were the following day... I'd say try her regular doc and if she can't get in right away, go on to the ER. I know they hate it but if she can't get into her doc right away. there no reason for her to be in pain any longer than she absolutely has to. The reason I'm on all the stuff I'm on is because of an MVA and the pain is always worse when injuries are involved a day or two later... And that's not just 1 accident or 1 opinion. Anyway, I hoping that by now she has been checked out and is no longer uncomfortable...

Good luck and I too amn glad that she was not more seriously injured...

Update

Ok, so she went to a general physician, got x-rays taken, and was prescribed flexeril and celebrex. pullease... anyway, hopefully the flexeril will loosen up her back and neck. thanks for all your help everyone, and thanks for the concern for her, i consider myself and her lucky, it could have been much worse than it was. thanks again

She should definately consult a personal injuries solicitor/lawyer. Even if its just minor damage.. you can claim for emotional distress.

I was in a car accident 2 years ago and i was the passenger. Straight into a telegraph pole.. my injuries were crushed rib, crushed vertibrae in 2 places (t7 and t10 i think they're called) as well as major bruising. I don't have much pain now.. but the wearing of the crushed vertibrae will cause pain later in life. I'm also suing for emotional stress due to the fact i'm scared of getting in a car with ANYONE ! i keep picturing accidents all around me !

I sued the third party insurance (this is in Australia) and it looks like i'll be awarded approx $75,000 minus solicitor fees.

So go get x-rays etc to be 100 % sure there's no permanent damage. Better to be safe than sorry. You only get 30 days in which to lodge a claim (in australia) so don't put it off.

I am so fucking sick of doctors that wont prescribe opiates to people that are genuinely in pain because they're scared that people are just out to catch a buzz. Fuck that shit. Opiates are the only drugs that really kill pain, and it really pisses me off that alot of times it's easier for junkies to get good painkillers than it is for people who actually need them and dont know how to go about getting them on the black market. Alot of dotors wont prescribe oxy unless you're practically dying and thats bullshit. I've had doctors and dentists that were even afraid to give me vicodin or codeine. I had a dentist try to give me ibuprofen for an extracted wisdom tooth that was impacted. Hell no, if I knew he was gonna do that, I would've just gotten a couple bags of dope and ripped the damn thing out myself. And a doctor once tried to give me naproxen for a fucking broken leg. What the hell is that about!? Just keep going to different doctors until you find one that will actually treat your pain appropriately. And tell all the other quacks how worthless their sevices have been and refuse to pay their bills. /end rant

She really should have gone to the ER as soon as he possibly could have. Esp with back and neck pain she could have some nerve damage (just make sure that nothing's going numb it could be bad, i mean fingers and toes too btw)

Generally if you wait til you can go to your family doctor one assumes the pain isn't nearly as bad as it is. Last year I had a car accident and ended up with lower back problems, but since I waited to go in my doc immediately thought it wasn't too bad (seriously...would you go in if it "wasn't that bad?" probably not) so he figured I had bruised/inflamed muscles from the impact put me on antiimflammatories for 2 weeks and nothing. Then he started saying stupid shit (to me yes stupid shit, he blamed my weight, my backpack for school, the way I sleep and anything else that can possibly be blamed, now I'd have put that into thought if it weren't for the fact I had NO back issues til the accident) I pretty much said screw this, I'm not paying copay to hear him say my back's really not fucked up. Fast forward last december, go snowboarding fall end up in the medic room. One EMT is checking my back and he says "you know I don't think your spine is sitting like it should be" and now the only way to make it better is to go to a chiropractor and that's not covered at all by insurance and guess what I have to suffer(one more reason to smoke bud...all the pain goes away!) Moral of the story: if it hurts go in ASAP, never wait it out. I'm 18 and my back is beyond screwed up from one fucking accident. Well not that the snowboarding helped at all but still.

Haha, Crimson, I totally agree with you. It is so much easier for junkies to just go cop some dope on the streets or to get some kind of opiate, than for a person who is actually injured and doesn't really care about catching a buzz to get some pain meds. But honestly you have to put yourself in their shoes, they probably get a lot of false complaints, its like the story of the boy who cried wolf. The police report is a piece of evidence though that should guarentee some good pain killers.

If you try, you can find a compassionate dr. I see two dr's, one is a TMJ specialist whom I hafta beg for an ultram script, and the other is my GP, who will give me what I ask for within reason...
I was having headaches, and straight out for a lortab script, and he wrote me for 20 7.5's, with no hesitation. You just hafta find the right doc.

So basically she got shit right? The flexeril might loosen up the tense muscles, but that's about it, killing any pain with those meds, ha! Anyways, give us an update how she's doing, and how the situation has progressed if ya can...
