In my head less and less.
I have been on suboxone for almost 6 months now. it is a very strong opioid. It has many side effects, one of the weirdest one is that I cannot cough. I can cough, of course, but nothing comes out. I havent haucked a loogie in months. My main question is.. Can this hurt me in the long run? Where does all that mucas go that is in my lounges? I'm also a smoker so coughing is very important. I feel fine, but maybe thats because of my medicine. Im mainly concerned because allergy season is coming up and I have a lot of mucas that builds up during this time. I want to know what is going to happen and what I can do. I do know that mucinex doesnt help much but if neccessary i will try to takemore. Any experiences?

I don't have any experience in this issue but has your sub doc said anything? Other people on the same medication must run into this issue. It may be worth asking.

Possibly you could use an inversion table or gravity boots to hang upside down... drain your lungs. Just an idea, and when I googled "inversion table" it came up with some dude that says it ruined his back. But who knows if that's true.

I would guess that not coughing is probably not that risky, that your body will take care of itself. Perhaps your body is swallowing the mucus/other things that it would be coughing up.

It can take 1-9 months of not smoking for your cilia to grow back, which help move mucus etc up and out. Perhaps not smoking (I realize how difficult this is) and using nicotine gum would help your respiratory system?

You're right to be concerned. Opiates/-oids are a respiratory depressant and coughing is the body's way of clearing the lungs. One of the warnings about suboxone is that at high doses it can cause breathing problems. I am speculating here, but after surgeries/analgesia patients are instructed to cough to avoid pneumonia, and you might want to ask your doctor about the possible danger of not coughing.

If you are generally healthy it is probably alright but I'd want to be sure.

Yeah im great never been better. I just know that allergy season is right down the road and im kinda worried about. I think the way my body takes care of it is by making me excessively clear my throat. I asked my doctor about it and he said he knew a man that just fell over because of that. He did not realize anything was rong. My doc recommended mucinex but the pills are massive and they have yet to work.
