Cannabis usage before sleeping and dreams

One of the reasons I ended up become a stoner is because when I smoke pot before bed I tend to not dream (although sometimes I do.) I don't really have good dreams, I have nightmares, and being able to sleep without worrying that I'll encounter terror and misery takes a lot of anxiety off my chest. When I had some days without weed, I remembered way too many details of my dreams, and it was quite uncomfortable to be honest, even with other sleep aids involved.

I really can't answer on this because no matter what I usually have always been to able to recall my dreams. The reasoning behind that is too long to explain and people will probably think I'm crazy anyways. Yet marijuana does help me a lot to fall asleep and usually when I'm up late and can't sleep I'll take a snap or hit off my spoon and soon after I'm asleep...deep sleep actually and then I will wake up and be pretty dazed compared to other days. It does take me a little longer to remember my dream once I wake up.. I haven't compeltely forgotten my dream though or had problems because of smoking marijuana before bed....just a little slowed but that's pretty much expected.

if i smoke i wont dream or wont remember them.
also when high i find it hard to get sleep when i am coming down i become sleepy and it knocks me out in no time.

i can see how weed can help people to get some sleep that suffer from insomnia.
For me it isn't a good sleeping aid , yes it put you out in no time but the sleep is not refreshing at all and waking up very groggy and tired.

it def. reduces sleep quality a lot for me.

One of the most noticeable things about ceasing cannabis use is the dramatic return of dream recall. When I stopped smoking round the clock everyday, my dreams were so vivid that they were indistinguishable from reality. It was a real headfuck.

You what? Dreams are amazing. Especially lucid dreams. Becoming adept at lucid dreaming is one of the most rewarding pursuits I have ever engaged in. In fact, I sometimes refrain from smoking just because I want to dream.
+1 man, dreams really are amazing. I wish I could be able to have lucid dreams more often because I only had a few and it was when I stopped smoking after a few months of using weed daily. I stopped smoking again a few days ago after only a few weeks of daily usage, and I didn't remember a single dream yet. I was expecting to have some dreams... :p

I'm going to bed in a few mins tho, and I hope I'll have a lucid dream because those are truly amazing =D

Happy dreaming everyone!

yea man when you quit smoking you have some crazy dreams....
ahh and yet ANOTHER medical problem that marijuana solves..Night Terrors

I actually rather like some dreams but you get used to not remembering them..
POT DESTROYS YOUR DREAMS KIDS!!!:p

Pot kills dreams and not enough people pay attention to the flip side as it is. As a dope fiend I completely lost the ability to dream.

For I while I was debating whether I was just too burnt out in the morning to care to remember my dreams, or if I wasn't even having them anymore. I came to realize that my REM cycle was being suppressed. The severe negative side effects I experience from extreme constant cannabis abuse (depression, anxiety, antisocialism, burnout, anger, crushingly low self esteem, uncontrollable urge to blaze at all times even if i had just smoked up) always seem to lift only once I start having those intense vivid dreams that come 3 or 4 days after ceasing use. I believe the inability to dream is responsible for all of these negative aspects of cannabis abuse (I'm talking way more than a gram-a-day smoker here).

Whoever is saying dreams are overrated, that is rediculous. You're just too burnt out to have vivid ones. Every night we leave the physical world behind and travel through our minds, experiencing wondrous realities that are creations of our own. There is no difference between the experience of dreams and reality, except the possibilities are endless in dreams once you begin to pay attention to them and exert control. Lucid dreaming on the flip side is proving to have a positive effect on my rate of spiritual growth.

i personally find it a bit more difficult to drift off to sleep soon after smoking a bit.

now, if ive been vaping/smoking for a few hours/all day beforehand, and ive got to that nice "cant keep my eyes open, its impossible to resist lying down" stage,
thats a different story :D

i wouldnt recommend daily/heavy/habitual cannabis use if you want to recall your dreams etc.
i dont remember many of my dreams, if i have them that is. (when im stoned)

stopping my cannabis consumption for a week or so tends to lead to INSANE, sometimes lucid, dreams, where i wake up many times during the night in sweats (not from scary dreams, just happens).
this usually happens for a few days then im perfectly fine.

oh the wonders of bio-chemistry/pharmacokinetics and the human body.

For simplicities sake I'll only discuss THC, but does the following in your brains in pathways most implicated in dreaming:
-Releases melatonin
-inhibits acetylcholinesterase (breaks down acetylcholine)
-releases acetylcholine
-inhibits choline acetyltransferase (what makes acetylcholine)

So long story short most people can expect really vivid dreams if they're irregular users and no dreams for chronic users.
Edit: also cannabis can suppress the hell out of REM sleep for what its worth.

I cant remember most of my dreams when Im smoking marijuana. Its only after I stop for a week I can remember them. It is probably because when you smoke marijuana it is increasing melatonin production up to 400% so when it is actually time to sleep you melatonin levels are out of wack. I never feel like I actually got any sleep after smoking weed and passing out.
