From the article:

Vaporized cannabis "significantly augments" the analgesic effects of opiates in patients with chronic pain, according to clinical trial data published online in the scientific journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics.

Abstract:

Cannabinoids and opioids share several pharmacologic properties and may act synergistically. The potential pharmacokinetics and the safety of the combination in humans are unknown. We therefore undertook a study to answer these questions. Twenty-one individuals with chronic pain, on a regimen of twice-daily doses of sustained-release morphine or oxycodone were enrolled in the study and admitted for a 5-day inpatient stay. Participants were asked to inhale vaporized cannabis in the evening of day 1, three times a day on days 2–4, and in the morning of day 5. Blood sampling was performed at 12-h intervals on days 1 and 5. The extent of chronic pain was also assessed daily. Pharmacokinetic investigations revealed no significant change in the area under the plasma concentration–time curves for either morphine or oxycodone after exposure to cannabis. Pain was significantly decreased (average 27%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 9, 46) after the addition of vaporized cannabis. We therefore concluded that vaporized cannabis augments the analgesic effects of opioids without significantly altering plasma opioid levels. The combination may allow for opioid treatment at lower doses with fewer side effects.

doesn't cannabis relieve pain anyway when taken alone? does it really surprise anyone it enhances other painkillers?

^ I think that it does surprise people, and that it is very worthwhile to do such studies.
Drugs can react strongly to the presence of other drugs in the system.
Combinations of two drugs can lead to reduced effects or either/both, strengthened effects of either/both, new effects not attributable to either drug alone, or no interaction at all.
Therefore, to have scientific evidence that cannabis has such effects in combination with other painkillers is very important.

I've always thought they worked well together. %) I am glad there are legit studies looking into this.

I agree Highhooked, cannabis does seem to be synergistic in a safe way with almost anything.

^ Depends what you mean by "safe".
Weed can increase the effects of drugs, and someone who is on a relatively heavy dose of LSD, for example, may be taken to a place where they lose control.

(That said, I find it very pleasant to use it in combination with mescaline, LSD, opium, and many other drugs.)

This is news how? My chronic pain doctor told me flat out that if Cannabis helps control my neuralgia and helps boost the painkilling effects of morphine that she wasn't going to tell me to stop smoking it. She recommended something like sativex for me but i can't afford the stuff and you really can't get medical Cannabis here at all.

Thank fuck i don't have to do piss tests like alot of people in the US i know do.
