Recently, I visited the ER due to recurring stomach problems, a continuation of my long-term bowel issues and previous surgeries. During the examination, the doctor inquired about my cannabis use, to which I honestly replied that it was minimal. A standard CT scan was performed for abdominal evaluation. Subsequently, I was discharged with a diagnosis of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), based on a positive cannabis drug test.

While I acknowledge CHS as a recognized condition involving cyclical nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain associated with cannabis use, and that the diagnosis can be made after 3 or more yearly episodes, I have reservations about its applicability in my case. I understand there can be skepticism surrounding CHS diagnoses. It is a chronic gut-brain disorder related to long-term cannabis use and is characterized by episodic vomiting and abdominal. I plan to discuss this further with my physician

Anyone else experienced this shit?

Not really the same shit but I once told an ER staff I smoked and they drug tested me cause this was Ohio, and I'm almost certain I popped for opioids 🤣

My son was a chronic pot smoker in high school. He vomited every single day for probably a year poor guy just couldn't put the pipe down even though
mega bong hits was giving him major nausea. Didn't know for sure about this CHS but sure thing that problem went away when he stopped smoking such copious amounts of weed and shatter.
Seemed to me it was connected with obsessive pot smoking beyond a reasonable amount.
And painful to watch your loved ones suffer with such a weird side effect from using too much of the seemingly benign cannabis..

I had a friend with this condition. He hung himself after a year or 2 of suffering. I don't smoke pot super often and it's never made me nauseous. This dr just wanted to blame shit on weed to make his night flow faster.

Ugh I actually used to have chronic nausea and serious stomach issues (vomiting and diarrhea, constant stomach cramps…) and I actually didn’t smoke at all when it started. I was sober and was living with an abusive boyfriend. After two episodes of it where i ended up in the hospital vomiting blood and severely dehydrated, and doctors not knowing what was wrong with me, i started smoking weed and it ended up helping for years until i started having seizures and chronic pain as well. I ended up leaving my abusive fiance after five years and seizures stopped snd my chronic pain wasnt as bad, and my vomiting episodes werent nearly as often or as severe.
But then after leaving and still using weed to control my chronic pain and nausea, i had an episode that landed me in the er. I hadnt actually smoked weed for a few days because i had travelled up to LA to make a report against my ex, but i was vomiting nonstop and they ended up hospitalizing me and nothing would stop the nausea until they dosed me with ativan and i knocked out. When i woke up they said that since i told them i smoke weed almost daily theyre disgnosing me with Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome despite me telling them i hadnt smoked in a few days and think that my nausea episodes are due to stress as i was diagnosed with FND/PNES (stress seizures) and think that the nausea may be a presentation of stress. They put CHS on my chart anyways and made a big stink about calling me a weed addict since i wont quit. Now any time i go to the er for a “CHS” episode they give me shit about my “weed problem”

The fucked up part is that i feel so much better when i smoke. When i dont smoke a certain amount daily (and there are times ill forget or am too busy to smoke, or just dont feel like it) i get nauseaous. When i smoke i dont feel any nausea or dizziness. It genuinely makes me feel normal and if i go a few days without it and my ptsd gets triggered bad enough ill have a vomiting episode.

Long story short, doctors see any weed use + nausea as CHS and are discriminatory towards people who smoke weed.

Yes CHS does exist but you know your body better than some random ass doctor who doesn’t work with you consistently and if you get nauseous when you smoke, dont smoke, but if weed is something that helps you- don’t let this doctor scare you into thinking weed is hurting you.

no no...i would never lol. smoking helps me a lot with so many things. but it has nothing to do with what's going on with my guts.

take a break - then smoke again and see if it happens again

How long did you have nausea and vomit for when you visited the ER last time?
My young brother recently had an episode where he had to spend most of the night on the bathroom floor as he had to vomit/retch every few minutes.

A hot shower would calm the symptoms down for a bit but would not resolve the situation, which is typical of CHS episodes, or so I read.
Have you experienced relief from hot showers/baths as well?

If their use is minimal and they have had previous long term issues isn't it much more likely they were using cannabis to treat underlying symptoms? I think they should contact the surgeons for a second opinion. ER these days are a decent part triage doctors for the profit machine of American medicine. Sounds like a total bs diagnoses to me.

No, I've never had any symptoms like that.

I have had bowel issues for years, both when I was regularly smoking weed and when I wasn't. ATM, I'm smoking daily but not smoking much. I don't see causation.

I forgot to mention that it may be worth looking into a gastroenterologist. Lots of things can cause vomiting and such. Mine specifically is most likely cyclical vomiting syndrome triggered by stress.

Not a direct answer to your question but if you search google scholar you’ll find research that links chronic cannabis use with higher incidence of IBS

CHS is a trendy diagnosis right now. And, some docs will take the easiest way out to get to the next patient (And unfortunately, that's becoming more common. I blame the insurance companies, but many doctors are becoming complicit.)
exactly!!
