New survey reveals that cannabis is anything but a "soft" drug
A national survey commissioned by the Richmond Fellowship of New South Wales (RFNSW) indicates that nearly half of all Australians underestimate the harmful impacts of using cannabis, with people in their late twenties and early thirties most likely to discount the devastating mental health effects the drug can cause.

The survey also highlights that current and past cannabis users are most prone to denying the links between the drug’s use and mental health complications such as depression or psychosis (including schizophrenia).

The information will be presented at a cannabis symposium being hosted by the RFNSW in Sydney next week, where a panel of medical, legal and academic experts and cannabis users will discuss and make recommendations on how the community can be better informed about the health and social impacts of cannabis, particularly for young people.

(...)

RFNSW Chief Executive Officer Pamela Rutledge said the data reinforced many scientific and anecdotal views about cannabis use and effects on mental health.

“Anecdotally, our field workers see the terrible toll cannabis takes on users on a day-to-day basis, particularly on young users,” Ms Rutledge said.

“But our young clients with a mental illness are usually oblivious to the high chances that their plight is linked to using cannabis.

“We are talking about people suffering depression and psychosis, people who hear voices and people who are tangled in the justice and health systems because their mental wellbeing is in a tailspin.

“They just don’t realise that cannabis is pulling them down and it’s of real concern that they typically turn to cannabis, thinking it will ease their downward spiral.

“This survey highlights that cannabis users are the most dismissive and vulnerable in terms of what the drug can do to their mental state.

“That suggests that more effort should go towards educating cannabis users – particularly young users – about the mental health dangers.”

this attitude has successfully and pervasively infiltrated academia and the psycho-therapeutic profession.

social workers see the worst of the worst cases, and seem unable to think outside the box about correlation and causation, and the quagmire that turns up when money and prohibition are considered.

people working at a mental health clinic, hospital, education center, etc, have been heavily indoctrinated, as politicians press more and more on actually "legislating science". (often, they succeed. eg the sacking of Nutt in UK, and currently legislation concerning some endangered species and always official statements regarding drugs-there is no real science in government unless it allows somebody to make money)

even doctors tend to not recognize that cannabis is often used for medicinal purposes, whether the user is using for that purpose wittingly or unwittingly.

CANNABIS IS SOOOO AWFUL AND DEADLY!!! so much so that when I got off probie 8 months ago, I started smoking everyday. I'd smoked maybe 3 times before in my life before I got off. I've smoked everyday since then and while my short term memory has gone to shit, I'm definitely not dead.

No reader comments on the article yet? I would post a comment there myself but cannabis science isn't my forte.

That's probably because people aren't even going to waste their time commenting on this article. The Daily Mail did an article similar to this one about a month ago, was pretty much the same dumb pseudo-science.

The daily mail sounds alot like the globe and mail over here aka the mop n pail. The only purpose it serves is lining the bottom of a kitty litter box :\

I have been smoking cannabis since i was 12 years old and i have never noticed any addictive qualities to it. Much unlike tobacco and alcohol it does not seem to cause any withdrawal symptoms or any real negative symptoms when you don't have it. Also as someone who has both chronic pain and bipolar disorder it helps my neuropathic pain alot and helps level out my moods. If i wasn't so cheap and had a vaporizer or a water pipe then it wouldn't even be doing any damage to my lungs. Granted since i smoke almost a pack of ciggs a day(anyone who thinks cannabis is addictive should try and quit smoking ciggs cold turkey :! ) i doubt the cannabis has much or any damaging effects compared to the tobacco.

Fuck the nice legal addiction known as nicotine seriously.

Cannabis is one of my favorite speaking points, so this is going to turn into something of a rant, my apologies in advance.
“But our young clients with a mental illness are usually oblivious to the high chances that their plight is linked to using cannabis.
Errrr... okay so they have a small point here, though it depends on the person. Some people find incredible benefit from using, others can't even begin to think straight while high. Think about this though, isn't the nature of diagnostic medicine trial and error? Furthermore cannabis has less side effects than the pharmaceuticals they so readily back. I've yet to encounter a story of someone becoming suicidal from cannabis use; try finding me an anti-depressant that hasn't caused at least a handful of suicides.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh my, haven't had that good of a laugh in a while. If you cared even half as much as you make it out to seem, they wouldn't be in an environment to obtain these drugs. Do you really think a lifetime of depression and the mental repercussions associated with it can be fixed via a simple cure-all? I think not. Why is it that so many of the people you speak of here never receive counseling? You're more than glad to go all out to put a teen caught with a small amount of cannabis through rehab AND counseling. Funny how you then use all of these teens that go through therapy to enlarge the statistical evidence of increased teen addiction. You can do that for a stupid number just because it helps your own agendas, but when someone with a real ailment comes knocking you refuse them help because they have no money. Glutinous pigs.

Oh, more bullshit statistics you say? Cool story bro.

Okay if you're going to have that much subtext in one sentence you really should give people fair warning, and possibly a translation guide for all the double meanings you managed to pack in here. I'm a nice person, so I'll do the honors of translating.
Code:
I. Effort = Taxpayer money
II. Educating = Fear-mongering
I. I say this because money is the only thing being done to solve the so-called problem. Every year increasing amounts of money (in the billions) are thrown at the "problem." It trickles down, each bureau/organization/etc. passing the buck to the next in line to fix an inherently uncontrollable problem.
II. Instead of wasting money (most of which is on marijuana prohibition, yet the meth that gets made from cough syrup, rat poison, and in some cases human urine never gets investigated. The only time you hear of a meth lab being busted is either because of it blowing up, or it was completely accidental.), why don't you try an approach that has been working very well in Holland since the '70s. It's this insane thing called.... you might wanna sit down for this... the truth. Instead of trying to control people with fear (ask Mubarak and Gaddafi how well that works), try giving them the straight facts and then making them fully responsible for their actions.
