Police fear violence between Alberta biker gangs as economy plummets

Police are concerned the downturn in the economy will result in increased violence in Alberta, as competing motorcycle gangs chase fewer dollars in the drug trade.

In the past five years as the economy boomed, outlaw biker gangs “exploded” and spread throughout the province, said Insp. Darcy Strang of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams.

But now, with the crash in oil prices, officers are worried those gangs will become more cutthroat to maintain market share.

“We could see more and more violence just because of this aspect of the business model, (it) needs to make enough money,” he said.

“If you’re selling in my area and I’m kind of hurting for cash, and we’re not friends anymore … I probably would like to get rid of you, most likely, so I can take over.”

I've lost a lot of faith in our long term chances of late.

If we do end up making it as a species into the next century, I'd wager that the biggest aid for global stability and cooperation will be the internet, and more specifically, social media. I see it helping to do away with so called 'culture shock' and the violent consequences of petty disagreements which have historically created some serious schisms between each side of past conflicts.

It'll never be perfect, and unfortunately there will always be issues which result in avoidable loss of innocent life (at least, for the foreseeable future), but I think it would be unrealistic to expect that we always get along, so to speak.

I saw a few patches today I have never seen before, 5 years ago wearing a non HA patch meant a beating maybe even worse. It's good the HA have some competition. Alberta has some of the lowest purity cocaine in North America. Anyway police in this country are always predicting a biker war. They can use the fear to try and increase their budgets. And if they predict a war every year and then a war finally happens they can say they told you so.
There seems like there is an unspoken attitude that people don't care as long as there is no war in streets. Pretty sure if it was a Jamaican posse at the top that ma and pa suburbanites would not be as willing to turn a blind eye. Maybe its racism, maybe its because the ethnic gangs don't have a toy drive, I don't know. It just seems one group has been allowed to rise to the top and as long as there is no public violence no one cares. I predict Mexico goes that way too, just lets one group win and shuts down all the other ones...
