Justin Trudeau wants to legalize marijuana in order to ‘keep it out of the hands of our kids’
National Post
July 24th, 2013

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who has already called for the decriminalization of marijuana, this week said he would like to see it legalized altogether.

Speaking in Kelowna, B.C., he told a crowd, “I’m actually not in favour of decriminalizing cannabis. I’m in favour of legalizing it.

“Tax it, regulate. It’s one of the only ways to keep it out of the hands of our kids because the current war on drugs, the current model is not working. We have to use evidence and science to make sure we’re moving forward on that.”

The Liberal leader’s comments, captured in a brief YouTube video clip, appear to take his party further than it has gone so far on the issue of drug legalization.

For non-Canadians: Justin Trudeau is the leader of the Liberal Party, the "centre" of the three main political parties here.

That's cool, I wish one of the main party politicians here would come out with stuff like this.

Instead they just keep saying it causes mental illness and we dont need more drugs legalised.

he wants to, but how long is it going to take for these laws to take place.

\o/ CONGRATS CANADA (^_^)

my friend is going over to canada for half a year or something he will love this news ;)

I don't like Justin Trudeau at all (i hated his dad who some fucking upper Canadians seem to still worship worse) but he is still far better then the Conservatives by miles. Cannabis almost became decriminalized or legalized (i forget which) back before the conservatives fucked this country right up worse then it was so i think it could happen under a Liberal government. It is sad when we have a government so ideologically opposed to well anything fun at all that they put in mandatory minimums which where previously unheard of in Canada for growing Cannabis at the same time that some US states legalized it. Guess the Führer or i mean Prime minister :\ didn't want his subjects getting any lofty ideas from you Liberals down south.

Hopefully if he is elected he follows through with this. It really is about time the whole world woke up to this issue, the ignorance that people still have on this matter in 2013 is astounding.

The conservatives need to go but I don't want to vote liberal just because it's liberal; I want there to be a solid liberal option. Trudeau is just not it.

As for "legalize and tax", that means putting cannabis under the same guise as alcohol. Like liquor stores we'll have cannabis stores, with only certain companies being licensed to produce and sell, while everything else is illegal. People would still go to jail for growing it without a license.

He's delusional if he thinks taxing it will keep it out of the hands of children. If you want to smoke pot in BC it's around every corner.

.

What is stopping you from becoming a micro brewer? Or opening a vineyard? Besides minimum health standards like you can't poison people a few hundred grand you could do it too. No you are right you just can't sell your homebrew on craigslist or the liquor store and there are good reasons for that. There are people selling weed chock full of chemical ferts they didn't flush either. Weed with mold. I am all for legal weed sold in stores to stop that. I am also against indoor residential growing as I saw a 1000 watt light explode and start fire, if I hadn't been there it would have been a disaster. Backyard is one thing but I don't want to live next to a residential pot factory. Indoor growing should be in a warehouse, sorry if that eliminates the "little guy".

Justin Trudeau On Marijuana Legalization: My Opinion 'Evolved'

Justin Trudeau clarified his stance on marijuana Thursday, saying legalizing the drug is a "very responsible thing to look at and to do."

The Liberal leader explained his shift in opinion on the controversial issue during a stop in Vancouver, saying he has "evolved" in his opinion about legalization.

“I have evolved in my own thinking. I was more hesitant to even decriminalize not so much as five years ago. But I did a lot of listening, a lot of reading, and a lot of paying attention to the very serious studies that have come out and I realize that going the road of legalization is actually a responsible thing to look at and to do,” he said, according to the Globe and Mail.

In the past, Trudeau has expressed support for decriminalization, but held back from supporting legalization. In his comments to the crowd at Vancouver's English Bay, he said that isn't enough.

"Decriminalization just removes the criminal penalties that are applied to people for having consumed, or owning marijuana, and that tends to bog down the legal system, and keeps the gangs, basically and the criminal elements that are profiting from marijuana."

"Once we control it, tax and regulate it, we allow for development of a medical marijuana industry, that will actually be responsive to the needs of the many consumers of medical marijuana," he told the crowd.

On Wednesday, the Liberal leader said to a crowd in Kelowna that he was in favour of a "tax and regulate" approach to cannabis to "keep it away from kids."

well good somebody got their head outta their ass. But i dont care for weed no more, cant smoke it. Legalise benzo and opiates bitch!

Technically, they are "legal" but highly controlled and regulated. This is not too dissimilar to what I believe would be beneficial for most recreational drugs. However, there should definitely be controls on the sale, not a simple free for all, supermarket style setup where kids can go spend their pocket money on a bag of smack.

It's a complicated issue, but I think it needs serious thought and proper debate.

lol wut? if anything those destructive substances should be more illegal. benzos at class 4 is a joke
Oh yeah you probably didnt think of the fact that heroin overdoses would be reduced by like 10000%? No more ''i shoot x bags at a time and one day the quality is purer and bam OD''. Secondly People who like opiates like myself could go by whatever they like whitout paying millions for some oxy or a cut to shit bag of smack. Benzos should be avaible to people who are able to use them responsibly. Like me atm. THey help with anxiety, i dont abuse them. Honestly if youre the stoner type that is all like ''fuck errthang not natural mang'' then fuck off, this is not a weed exclusive forum.

I hate all the main political parties in Canada so i just vote for the least shitty. If we legalize it hopefully they won't do what they did with beer and liquor in every province but Quebec and Newfoundland which is make you go to a beer or liquor store to get it instead of being able to buy it in a convenience store, grocery store or gas station. It was weird when i first moved to the mainland cause i would wonder where the fuckin beer was when i went to a gas station or convenience store lol

It may as well be legal in some places here because you can literally order it like you would a drink if your a local in some places.

Fuck Trudeau all the same but atleast he's better then Harper who is just a neo-conservative wack job who would probably move the capital to Calgary if he could. Fuckin twat :p

Justin Trudeau's pro-pot stance out of sync with Conservatives, Pope and Mexico

OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau's pot legalization stance may be a hit with the Grit grassroots, but not so with the governing Conservatives, the pontiff, and at least one international ally.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena said his country is open to an alternative to the war on drugs but legalizing drugs — even pot — isn't on the table for his government.

"We personally don't believe drug legalization is a solution, but we welcome (the idea) that a debate should be held around those issues," he said during an official visit to Ottawa Thursday.

Meade Kuribrena was in town to discuss issues such as tourism, trade, the economy and transnational crime linked to drugs with Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

"It's an issue that does not recognize borders, it's an issue that must be faced through intelligence, through co-operation, and through a perspective that goes beyond one country's policy," he said.

Earlier this week, Trudeau announced he's for legalizing, taxing and regulating pot — a shift from his stance during the Liberal leadership race when he endorsed its decriminalization. His new position was supported by a majority of party members at their 2012 policy convention.

Trudeau argues government oversight is the best way to keep pot away from teens.

"If we control and regulate it, then we have a better way to make sure anyone who buys it in a regulated environment is of age to make that decision, similar to alcohol or cigarettes. It's an easier way to keep it out of the hands of our kids where it does the most harm," he said Wednesday at a rally in British Columbia.

The Tories take a tough stance on drugs, including marijuana, and aren't interested in changing tack.

"These drugs are illegal because of the harmful effect they have on users and on society," a spokeswoman for Justice Minister Peter MacKay said.

Mexico and a few Latin American countries have struggled with drug-related violence caused by the international narcotics trade.

According to the Drug Policy Alliance, a U.S.-based think-tank focused on drug policy reform, over 70,000 people have been killed since 2006 in Mexico's drug wars.

But former Mexican president Vincente Fox has turned into an outspoken advocate for drug legalization — an idea gaining traction in parts of the Americas.

On Thursday in Brazil, Pope Francis warned against that trend, arguing it would do more harm than good.

Pope francis would be probably more humbled if it was legalisitation of pedophilia

i just hate downers including alcohol. i don't understand people who do them for fun and get addicted and its like, the fuck did you expect to happen? and i think theres a special place in hell for the pharmaceutical drug pushers and the CIA who fund heroin production.

Your personal opinion doesn't change the facts. Just because you don't like downers, many people do and they will continue to use them regardless, this is why they should be legalized and regulated.

Added: Also, as a human being you have the right to choose whatever it is you want to put in your body. Nobody would force you to use other depressants if they were legal.

I love downers. Especially benzos and opiates. I had enough of being out of my mind on coke, meth, mdma and feeling like my heart bout to burst, iprefer to be relaxed now than to be psyhcotic and sleepless for dayz. I stil like CLEAN coke but its rare so i dot it rarely lol. Imo Downers are way more euphoric. I like alcohol too.

im with purplekush1, downers rule, letting go into bliss of warmth and forgetting all worries beats jaw clenching and immune system issues etc
