With Sicilian Mafia in Rapid Decline, Just Who Is Running the Mob in Montreal?

Vito Rizzuto was the Steve Jobs of organized crime. Charismatic, visionary and shrewd enough to run a billion-dollar enterprise with tentacles reaching from Montreal to New York, South America and Europe.

Because of its location along the St-Lawrence river and proximity to US markets, Montreal has always been a major point of entry for drugs, guns and basically whatever else you can fit into a shipping container.

And for the good part of three decades, Rizzuto had his hand in almost every racket in the city, heading a "consortium" of organized crime which included Colombian cartels, Irish gangs who controlled the city's port and Hells Angels who took care of distribution of drugs across Quebec and Ontario.

Rizzuto's death in December 2013—from natural causes—has left many speculating about his replacement and sources we spoke to hinted at a dramatic decline in the Sicilian Mafia's power in Montreal and Canada since his passing.

With the rise of Haitian street gangs, the imminent release of numerous Hells Angels from prison, and rival Italian factions, there is no shortage of conspiracy theories surrounding Vito Rizzuto's replacement. Chief among those theories is that the Ontario-based Calabrian mafia, also known as the 'Ndrangheta, is moving in and getting revenge after having been violently pushed out of the city by Vito's father in the 1970s.

I agree with the article the mafia will likely stick with the crooked contacts and corruption and their boiler room fraud offices. They arent really suited as a drug dealing organization any more. The Hatians will just kill you, any of them. The senior mafia guys don't kill anyone, they have it done. And they aren't going to get their son to do it either. The people who do those jobs always end up dead, it's not the path to becoming a don anymore. The Mafia itself doesn't control any corners, like I mean there are no Italian guys standing there selling dope. They just control the gang that controls that corner, and that power is easily taken by anyone who can sell wholesale drugs cheaper. I wouldn't bet on the mafia's power to increase in Montreal.

You're comparing Haitians to the Italian mob in Montreal, you don't know anything about Montreal or about any other city for that matter. Haitians can't even bring a gram of coke through any port in the world, it's the mob who is capable of bringing in tons of drugs with their international ties and influence over the ports.

The Sicilians influence in Montreal and Canada in general has lessened since their Heyday when they where shipping huge amounts of Coke and Heroin between Italy and other countries throughout the world and Canada. Today other international crime groups especially the ‛Ndrangheta have taken over alot of the business they controlled in not only Montreal but the rest of Canada as well.

You really can't compare street level gangsters like the Haitians to organized and sometimes international crime groups like the Sicilians or Ndrangheta. One operates at street level the other controls both criminal and legal business internationally

Yes the ‛Ndrangheta basically run things now in Canada, the United States, and in other countries. They're way more powerful and more secretive than the Sicilian mafia ever has been or will be.

I agree about how you can't really compare groups like the ‛Ndrangheta and street level gangs.
