Injection sites are not the answer
Ottawa Sun
August 9th, 2014

Last week, another study was released that concluded a supervised injection site would be a “fiscally responsible harm reduction strategy” to prevent the spread of HIV and Hep C.

Once again, without apology, we are going to make our position clear. No.

It comes down to a basic fundamental difference we have with the proponents of supervised injection sites.

We simply believe programs should be in place that have a proven measure of success in helping addicts get off drugs.

Some readers might be surprised we have compassion for addicts. (Yes, Virginia, there really is such a thing as a compassionate conservative.)

With poll: "Do you believe Ottawa needs a suprervised [sic] injection site?"

This is the kind of thinking that prevents any significant change from taking place in regard to helping people dealing with addictions. I would guess that the writer of this editorial has neither experienced addiction themself, nor known personally anyone who has. Programs do exist for "getting people off drugs", however, this is not what every individual wants or is ready for. Should those deep in addiction not also have resources to reduce their risk of contracting diseases like HIV and hep C? There is evidence that the supervised injection site in Vancouver has not just (dramatically) reduced overdoses in the downtown eastside, but has also reduced street crime in the area. Whoever wrote this bs editorial shows the opposite of the compassion they claim to feel for drug addicts, and it seems they also have no awareness of the growing move in public health toward harm reduction strategies. Kinda sad, but that's just my 2 cents....

Getting off hard IV drugs is great. Getting off hard IV drugs without ODing is paramount. Getting off IV drugs without having contracted a serious disease is very desirable. Not being made to feal like a worthless loser by ignorant people can make a huge difference.

These places provide a location that helps prevent the spread of disease and overdoses. It also provides a place ware compassionate help is available. This will allow many people to make it out in a healthy state. It also provides a much better standard of living and self image for the people who are in active addiction. Treating addicts and users in an awful manor will serve no positive purpose PERIOD. It does not motivate them to clean up, it does the opposite.

"Everybody's happy
Everybody's free
We'll keep the big door open
Everyone will come around

Why are you different
Why are you that way
If you don't get in line
We'll lock you away"

Addicts don't use to feal amazing, they use to feal better. By increasing the struggle, shame, stigmatism, and horror of their lives their struggle becomes so much harder. This promotes negative results. If you want positive results, quit promoting awful ones.

Addicts have a hard enough struggle without ignorant clowns making it worse in some asinine attempt to "address" the issue.

Demonizing, slamming, and holding an addict to the ground is never the best way to help them up and promote their live to start moving in a good direction.8(

You people wonder why its so hard to help people, its always hard to help people when all your doing is hurting them.

This is disappointing news for sure, but not surprising, and definitely expected considering who is running the show federally.

Next federal election can't come soon enough - the conservatards need to go the way of the Dodo asap.

Over the past decade, they have done some serious damage to our drug policies.

Edit - I'm pleasantly surprised of the poll results on the Ottawa Sun website.
