B.C. health provider, patients file lawsuit over heroin access
CBC
November 13th, 2013

A constitutional court challenge has been launched over the federal government's decision to prevent doctors from prescribing heroin to addicts.

Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul's Hospital in downtown Vancouver, says its lawsuit involves five patients who have been part of a clinical trial known as SALOME.

The SALOME trial examined a specific form of prescription heroin and operated under a federal exemption, but patients who left the trial are no longer covered under that exemption.

In a written statement to CBC News, the office of Health Minister Rona Ambrose said the federal government was forced to close loopholes that allowed "for the feeding of addiction under the guise of treatment."

The federal Conservatives are the worst government we have ever had in regards to social issues. They are stuck back in the stone age and they let ideology get in the way of science. Everything seems to indicate that prescription Heroin is a very useful tool in getting addicts off street drugs cut with god knows what and Heroin is much easier to quit then Methadone so i would go for Heroin rather then Methadone and i am sure i am not alone in this. Why the fuck should the ideology that Harper and company are trying to shove down the throats of Canadians overrule medical science? I hate those twats and everyone who voted for them :X

Up until 97 Heroin was used in hospitals in Canada for severe pain so why not bring it back to treat addiction to opiates? Or allow doctors to legally prescribe just about any opiate suitable for long term use to treat addiction. Canada is not going to advance much in the way drug users are treated until Harper get's booted back to his cave in Calgary.

Herion addicts are almost fully functional on the correct dose.. and if a herion "junkie<3" knows the concentration of the drug they will not die.

Yup you are exactly right. The only thing us Bluelighters need to get off of is that saying that goes something like this: "oh the gov't should just regulate and control the drug supply and let opiate addicts have their doses so they can feel like normal (NOT HIGH/nodding out like retards) people and thus letting them work and live normally on a stable dose of opiate of their choosing FOR LIFE." I like a lot of what that comment says, just that I don't agree the gov't should be involved with this "regulation" of the drugs b/c we all know that would just end up putting all opiate dependent people into a database that would really just put them in a situation as if they were caught and went to jail for a crime and thus making them un-employable. LEGALIZE, UN-REGULATE, and let the corporations supply the drug to people annoymously, that would be the right thing to do and i imagine anyone that has any pharmacology knowledge of opiates would also agreee with me. If the dependent person knows exactly what dose they are taking and know the product is pure and legit there will NEVER be a un-intentional overdose again in respect to the opiate classification of drugs. The only overdoses that would be reported would basically just be suicides b/c there would be no way for them to OD un-intentionally knowing exactly how many mgs of the drug they are doing b/c the corporations would provide a pure and clean product to the masses and would probably be the most profitable business of all time due to the "FOR LIFE" aspect they would have upon each of their customers..

The conservatives are trying to shut down the cannabis dispensaries also and make government pot the only option, which is irradiated and the shittiest quality weed ever. A lawyer is launching a constitutional challenge on that one as well. Dark times are ahead if it fails.

I really don't know what's happened to Canada. All of our best social reforms over the past 25-30 years have been undone by this single government, mostly with underhanded and legally questionable actions. The corporate globalist bullshit has taken over.

I pray every day that the winds change and things go back in the other direction, otherwise I need to consider getting out of this country.

That sounds exactly like our new Government in Australia :|

Heroin maintenance should be a right, especially if all other treatment options have been explored and proven to not work.

I'm glad this lawsuit is happening, but fighting the Government is like trying to beat a casino. The house always wins.

I really hope all you Canadian posters vote in 2015!

Here's a more in-depth story:

B.C. health provider and patients to sue over prescription heroin access
James Keller

VANCOUVER — For decades, Larry Love’s daily life was consumed by heroin. Find it. Inject it. Repeat.

That cycle, he said, was broken last year when he enrolled in a radical clinical trial in Vancouver evaluating the use of prescription heroin, seen as the treatment of last resort for severely addicted people for whom other therapy, such as methadone or detox, have failed.

“I just keep looking [for heroin] and receiving — it was a life of hell,” Love, 62, said Wednesday, as he joined other patients in a lawsuit against the federal government demanding continued access to prescription heroin.

“I entered [the clinical trial]. My health and well-being improved vastly.”

After he finished his one-year stint in the clinical trial, his doctor applied to Health Canada for special permission to continue prescribing heroin to Love and 20 other patients. The applications were approved.

Not to mention that under the Harper government mandatory minimums have been implemented for the first time in Canada. Honestly the political apathy in this country towards the taking away of our rights and hard fought for social programs makes me sick. Some Canadians especially central Canadians rag on America but Americans are not as apathetic as Canadians are and the political power in the US is not as concentrated as in Canada. Essentially we have a 1 man dictatorship as the Conservatives decide everything and Harper runs the party with a iron fist. How anyone could call Canada a democracy is beyond me.

If you had told me 10 years ago that Canada would implement mandatory minimum sentences where growing 6 plants equals 6 months in prison id have said you where nuts. How the times change.

So right. Harper is a vile disgusting scum bag who needs to be removed from power immediately. It will take decades to repair the damage done to Canada by this fanatic.
