Can you help someone getting sober if you still take drugs every week?

My brother has a substance problem - synthetics. Synthetic cannabis and synthetic speed / stimulants. It's all still legal in the UK until next year. Trying to get him into rehab because he's out of control.

But I want to make that I support him as best I can. Now I'm no saint, drink every day, coke 2 times a week with the odd binge. My wife and I have been talking about taking a break for months, always find a reason to make the call.

Thinking I need to clean up my act as well. Should have done it a while ago and a brother heading for rehab should be enough reason to make the change. It's not like my coke use has ever caused a problem apart from the bank balance. He's been arrested, wife threatening to leave him etc.

I'm not responsible for his addiction, but let's say we get him into rehab and I go visit. I can't sit there and talk to him when I've done blow the night before. He and used to get high a lot at uni and early twenties, he knows what I'm like.

Feels like it will be part of the recovery process. Not saying I won't ever dabble again, but for now I reckon this could help.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like he'll be the one in the position to help you get sober, not the other way around. You may be the one who benefits by visiting him in rehab.

Bit of a sticky situation as you could be a trigger for him. I'm by no means experienced in helping people though so this is just my opinion. All the best!
