can you get drunk off ethyl acetate?

Heheh, was talking to someone about this today. Tasted some and, as expected, it burns and doesnt really taste of much, of course you can smell it tho. Don't know if it would be possible to drink it or if it would burn too much, and you cant really dilute it with water because its pretty insoluble. Maybe i'll try and chug a ml or so 8o I guess if you can drink enough it'll get you drunk as it hydrolyses.
 
If it did hydrolyze in your stomach to a significant extent, wouldnt you just get a build up of acetaldehyde in your system? Thats no fun.

Surely the excess acetate would slow the acetaldehyde --> acetic acid metabolism step.
 
Have some ethanol handy, it might have anecdotal uses in ethyl acetate poisoning (I don't know what i'm basing this hypothesis on)
 
Why...just why would you subject yourself to that torture. The horrid acetic acidy smell/taste (one of the those smells so strong and nasty, you can kind of taste it as well), akylated to ensure that it sticks around as long as possible...I almost want to puke right now.

If one has a lab, but no alcohol, WHY, for the love of god, are you heading for the ethyl acetate, yet ignoring diethyl ether, if one happens to have any, that CAN be drunk, and in my experience with it, its quite fun, with few of the negatives of alcohol, no lasting hangover, and its over in a few hours.

When the irish, the prohibition era americans and women (at the time, alcohol drinking was dissapproved of in women, who used to use patent 'medicines' based on a mixture of diethyl ether and ethanol) were drinking ether, it was said, that an ether drunk, packs in three times as many drunken stupors into the same time, than an alcoholic=D

The way to do it, is fill your mouth with a slush of icy water, hold it for a while, and spit, then down the ether, then a chaser of cold water (or alcohol:P)

Synthesis is simple also.

Yes, but you reek of ether for many hours afterwords. And, lots of people including me get nauseated from it, it's not a hangoverless deal for them.

If it works for you, more power to you, but it has little appeal to me.

Neither does drinking ethyl acetate. Every mole of alcohol it gets metabolized to liberates a mole of acetic acid, too. You'd feel like the human pickle.
 
Paraldehyde makes you reek too, but it has it's fans.

It was my understanding that ether-using women used ether through candy drops (with ether laden centers)
 
Ya after my stint with a liter of ether last month I don't think I'm going to fuck w/ it again.
After it was all gone, I went to my cancer guided study prof., after accidentally sleeping into the meeting 20 minutes then running over there within 5 minutes of waking up; then she asked me if I've been working in the drosophila lab recently becuase I've been smelling hard of ether for hte past few weeks.
I was just like, "whoa, ya, I have organic synthesis lab as well". I don't think she believed me, lol, furthermore I've been afraid to have a conversation with her since
 
i'm very experienced with ether but i've quit messing with it as i seem to have burned out my GABA receptors (i now have a large permatolerance for alcohol, benzos, and other sedatives)
 
Right, that does it, i'm getting some ether somehow...

As for the ethyl acetate... hell no. How horrible. Not only do I already dislike the effects of ethanol, you have to drink that shit down, AND you get a mole of acetic acid for every mole of ethanol. Fuck that.

ethyl 4-hydroxy-butyrate though, sounds like a much nicer ester.
 
You could add sodium hydroxide & distill off the pure alcohol. A bit more work, but atg least you end up with plain ethanol....
 
anyone who wants to ingest or distill ethyl acetate for booze should pm me, i have a bridge to sell you and some perchloric acid I need disposed of "organically"
 
A bridge? Is it big, i probably cant afford it if its big. Ill happily dispose of the perchloric acid tho!
