"name that novel"

i will start by typing the openning couple of lines from a famous novel. the person who correctly guesses the title and author can take the lead and do the same.

Notes about the game
please dont try setting the quiz b4 you have won a round.
please quote well known text, it doesnt matter if its easy... in fact its better if it is. this way people wont feel they have to google the answer.
the game is played with honour, youll only cheat yourself!
