Are there any attempts to measure emotions? Like love hate surprise anger fear. Is there any research in this subject? I mean can we quantify emotions like distance mass time we measure as meter gram second. Can I measure e.g. love as so many units?
Thanks.

In a nutshell - No I don't think we can.

We can ask for subjective data but it's pretty much impossible to compare whether my +9 happiness is the same as the next persons +9 happiness.

Even within a particular subject, can we reliably and validly compare happiness at one moment to another quantitatively? Quite roughly, we might be able to set a series of recalled states in ordinal relation (ie, I would prefer state X to state Y, but not state Z, and so on), but these comparisons are heavily subject to the influence of immediate cognitive context shaping how recall is conducted.

Scientifically, no. But it's an interesting concept for discussion and brings to mind science's ability to measure and label certain types of brain function while still knowing next to nothing about the mind and consciousness.

And while we are still unable to scientifically quantify emotions and their intensity it's interesting to note that hypnotists rely on being able to tell suggestibility through looking into someone's eyes.

Really? Never heard that before.. interesting.

I've been doing a bit of reading on hypnotism recently.. Almost all my friends said I couldn't try it on them because they don't think it'll work.. which means, chances are; it won't.. they'll stubbornly fight it.
